10 Things You Can Do to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

by Katie Schlientz

There’s more to St. Patrick’s Day than sipping a green beer and gorging yourself on a little corned beef. Add a little luck to your day, and try one of these Irish-inspired activities:

1. Have a traditional Irish breakfast at Eileen’s Country Kitchen.

Eggs, Irish ham and blood sausage? Yes, please. Available throughout the day at this McLean Avenue diner, don’t be surprised if your waiter has an Irish brogue to match your meal.

2. Pick up some flavored oil to spice up an Irish dish.

Pure Mountain Oil, located in Tarrytown, is running a St. Patrick’s Day special on oils they feature in traditional Irish dishes. Stop by the store or visit their website to receive 15% off Garlic Mushroom Olive Oil, Sevillano Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and Traditional White Balsamic (all with accompanying recipes). Try the marinated lamb chops— delish!

3.  Grab dinner at Mamma Francesca’s.

This traditional Italian restaurant is turning Irish for the evening, offering a three course meal for $17 (excluding tax, gratuity and beverages).  Start with a mixed green salad; enjoy some corned beef, cabbage and potatoes; and finish your meal with a cannoli or cheesecake.

4. Download some FREE Irish tunes.

Local band Shilelagh Law offers a few free downloads of Irish favorites on their website, so you can turn down the day and turn up a little fiddle. Want to hear them live? They’ll be playing live tonight at Connolly’s Klub 45 at 4 p.m. (121 West 45th St., Manhattan) and Saturday at The Rambling House (4292 Katonah Ave., Bronx).

{IntoxiKate Tip! Get their early, these fun-loving musicians have quite the following.}

5. Bake an Irish Car Bomb Cake.

Named after the drink, this chocolate cake recipe combines Guinness, Bailey’s Irish cream filling, and a whiskey frosting. ‘Nough said. (Keep out of the hands of those little leprechauns.) I’ll be making this later today… pictures coming soon!

6. Save the date for the Yonker’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The 59th Annual Yonker’s St. Patrick’s Day parade will kick off this Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. on McLean Avenue. Sport some green, bring a chair, and enjoy some of the greatest talent our area has to offer. Click here for the full scoop. Visit Rory Dolan‘s for the after-parade party!

7. Watch the Quiet Man

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is screening the classic Irish film featuring John Wayne this evening. Bar and food service (Irish far, of course) starts at 7 p.m.; the movie starts an hour later.

8. Listen to the bag pipes blow!

Molly Spillane’s is pairing their special St. Patrick’s Day dinner and cocktail menu with Irish tunes played by bag pipers. Dig in to the Dublin fish and chips… Full menu here.

9. Make Shepherd’s Pie

Local chef and blogger Maria Reina offered her recipe on Small Bites using one of my favorite Irish cheeses (Kerrygold’s The Dubliner). It’s just WAY too good not to share.

10. Try a new local brew!

It’s sure to be all hands on taps today at Broken Bow Brewery. Stop by to fill your growler with Irish Red, an imperial IPA ale, that’s sure to please.
