Recipe: Deconstructed Sangria (Fruit Kabobs)

There’s nothing like a glass of red sangria on a hot summer day. While I love the fruit and wine combo, I have to admit I don’t always love the slices of fruit swimming around in my glass; they’re either bumping into my lips while I’m sipping (giving me a nice red wine mustache) or playing elusive when I’m trying to fish out a few pieces to eat.

This weekend, I tested out my “deconstructed sangria,” an easy recipe to prepare for any barbecue. Simply purchase some long, decorative toothpicks, skewer your favorite fruits (i used oranges, grapes, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries), and stick them in your wine glass. Add a little pre-bottle sangria, and you’ve got an instant hit on your hands! The skewers not only keep the fruit in line, but give the drink a decorative punch of color.

The best part? The fruit skewers can also be enjoyed on their own as a refreshing snack or healthy dessert option.

Love a strong sangria? Soak your fruits in a little brandy before you skewer them. The added liquor with give your fruit an added punch. Pick heartier fruits that won’t fall apart (like apples, grapes and blueberries) so they will stay on the skewer. If you’re hosting a party with under 21 guests, make sure to use different colored toothpicks to indicate the non-alcoholic fruit!
