I have to admit—I’m pretty handy in the kitchen, but when it comes to making cocktails, the best drink you’re getting from me is a well poured glass of wine or beer. If you’re looking for a schmancy fancy cocktail, you’ll find me with measuring spoons, recipes and (if I’m lucky not to spill it) cocktail shaker scattered across the bar.
But all my prayers were answered when I came across Bittermilk cocktail mixers during the StarChefs.com International Chefs’ Congress last month. One sip of their smoked honey whiskey sour, and I was hooked! These mixers make it easy to whip up a delicious cocktail (make sure to pick up plenty for your next holiday party.)
Joe and MariElena Raya (a husband and wife team from South Carolina) capitalized on the return of the classic cocktail to create easy-to-make drinks with a twist. The three recipes—smoked honey whiskey sour, bourbon barrel aged old fashioned and tom collins with elderflowers and hops—use all-natural, organic ingredients. The combination of bitter, sweet and acidic brighten the flavor of each bottle.
While these bottles are currently on South Carolina shelves, you can order the mix online on the Bittermilk website. ($14.95/per bottle serves about 10 generous glasses) Keep in mind, these are non-alcholic mixers, so while you’re waiting for your delivery to be shipped, pick up the accompanying liquor at the store.

On a recent trip to Park City Utah, I visited the High West Distillery and came home with a few bottles of their High West Whiskey Campfire. This was the perfect ingredient to make the whiskey sour. Since the mixers are on the cheaper end (I love a great deal), splurge a little on a middle-to-high end whiskey.
