Hudson Valley Restaurant Week: Harper’s Bar and Restaurant

by Katie Schlientz March 18, 2015
written by Katie Schlientz
harper's bar and restaurant

Husdon Valley Restaurant Week runs March 9th to March 22nd, and I’ve encourage myself (and you!) to try some new restaurants and old favorites with an “IntoxiKate challenge.” I’m visiting seven restaurants during the “week” (really two!) the special is running. It’s been a while since I visited Harper’s Bar and Restaurant in Dobbs Ferry, so I put it on my list. And I was really glad I did!
Chef Chris Vergara was generous with the options and the portions on the #HVRW menu. It was the type of meal that left me wanting more—I waited as patiently as possible for each course, but I was riddled with anticipation. As the wait staff returned to the floor from the kitchen, hands full of plates, I secretly wished it was my next course.

harpers bar and restaurant

First Course: Although it was hard to decide with items like smoked trout rillettes and Hudson Valley foie gras on the menu, I went with the duck liver toast, complete with marsala shallots and walnuts. My toast was a little on the charred side, but I couldn’t get enough of the duck live. Could’ve gotten a whole pint of that to go!

SECOND COURSE: This is THE dish I was most excited about, and Chef Vergara did not disappoint. The crispy Hudson Valley duck leg was served over a generous helping of white beans, pancetta, and caramelized onions.

THIRD COURSE: The salted caramel pot de créme combined sweet and salty with hazelnuts, sea salt and whipped cream.

Great Beers for St. Patrick’s Day

by Katie Schlientz March 16, 2015
written by Katie Schlientz
beer

On today’s show of Fork This with IntoxiKate, Mitch DeSimone offered some great beers for St. Patrick’s Day you can pick up at Half Time (home to the world’s largest selection of beer) in Mamaroneck. Here’s a quick recap of what Mitch mentioned:

Murphy’s Stout: Dry Irish Stout

A great alternative to Guinness, slightly more full bodied but otherwise similar in most aspects. Delicious malt flavors, slightly roasted and chocolaty, with a beautiful creamy texture. Open the can and flip it upside down to pour aggressively into an imperial pint glass, watch it settle and enjoy! Pairs well with potatoes and hearty foods, works nicely with a corned beef dinner or a traditional hearty Irish breakfast, and plays very well with Jameson. This beer is truly GREAT to cook with!

Smithwicks: Irish Red Ale

A beautiful deep amber color nearly identical to the shading of its packaging, this beer blends perfectly the rich malty flavors of Ireland’s best beers with the soft fruity flavors of traditional Irish ale yeasts. This beer is complex enough to satisfy any beer enthusiast, as I am constantly reminded every time I find a pint in my hand, but will still be very well received even by those who typically shy away from beer. A personal and family favorite!

Flying Dog Lucky SOB: Irish Red Ale

For a very interesting Americanized spin on traditional Irish ales, check out this Irish Red Ale from Maryland! Brewed with four leaf clovers, this beer is sure to bring you luck when paired with a nice corned beef and cabbage sandwich with stone ground mustard on fresh rye. For St. Patrick’s Day or the morning after, this is an absolute must try.

The White Hag Brewing Company Black Boar Imperial Oatmeal Stout

The newest craft brewery to begin importing into New York, White Hag brings quite a few intriguing beers to our shelves. This is my personal favorite, a big, hearty 10%ABV Imperial Stout brewed with oatmeal to add a very full body and rich velvety texture that makes Guinness look and taste like water! Pair this with only the heartiest of meals, as it has a tendency to overpower anything you throw at it! A fatty corned beef loaded with potatoes, carrots and cabbage will help bring out the roasted notes in the beer, and a thick lamb stew will blend beautifully with the flavors of this big beer.

Sam Smith’s Organic Hard Cider

Outside of Magners, Ireland’s ciders are consumed far too rapidly to be exported to the US. Luckily England produces a handful of enjoyable alternatives; one of which is the Sam Smith Organic Cider. Slightly dry and packed with flavor, this certified organic beverage is a great alternative to the traditional Irish powerhouse cider that doesn’t break the bank.

written by Katie Schlientz
dan rooneys

Looking for the best places to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Westchester? Check out some of the local eateries offering some Irish grub (and in some cases tunes) this Tuesday…

Dan Rooney’s Sports Pub

In addition to the Irish offerings found on their regular menu, the pub at Empire City Casino is offering specials like fish and chips ($15), corned beef and cabbage ($19), a Guinness burger served on a pretzel bun ($15) and their signature Irish brownie sundae with Guinness, vanilla ice cream and whiskey caramel sauce ($9).

Katie’s Cottage

Known as the “friendliest and liveliest Irish bar-restaurant in Yonkers,” this town favorite features Irish standards like corned beef and cabbage and shepherd’s pie on their St. Patrick’s day menu. Also available will be a sizzlin’ 12-oz shell steak; fish and chips; and an Irish dish of bangers, mash, and beans. The Pipes and Drums of Westchester will be performing at 6 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day with Martin Kenny and Big Bamboo at 9:30 pm.
{521 Central Park Ave., Yonkers, 914-965-0422, katiesny.com}

Yard House at Ridge Hill

With a beer menu that stands up to Irish pubs year-round, the Yard House at Ridge Hill is pulling out all the stops for St. Paddy’s by introducing beer-braised corn beef brisket, a grilled corn beef sandwich, and shepherd’s pie. Drink specials at their sports bar include green beers, a cinnamon Guinness and various mule cocktails.
{237 Market St., Yonkers, 914-375-9273, yardhouse.com}

Chocolations

Looking for something to sweeten up your St. Patrick’s Day? Chocolations has you covered. Pick up their Baileys Irish Cream Truffles for a confection with a kick. Other holiday favorites include Irish soda bread, Irish scones, clover-shaped truffles and a unique beer-flavored truffle.
{607 E. Boston Post Rd., Mamaroneck, 914-777-3600, chocolations.com}

Garth Road Inn

The owner of the Garth Road Inn, Sharon Crowley, is being honored as New York County Cork Woman of the Year. The traditional Irish restaurant will be featuring live Irish music and Irish dancers all of St. Patrick’s weekend to complement favorite Irish fare.
{96 Garth Rd., Scarsdale, 914-722-9472, thegarthroadinn.com}

Emma’s Ale House

This Best of Westchester-winning White Plains establishment has an entire menu dedicated to St. Patrick’s Day, which will be available to order from March 14 (the day of White Plains’ parade) to the 17th. Favorites include the Guinness braised beef stew and the Rooney Burger. There will also be live Irish music performances on St. Patrick’s Day.
{68 Gedney Way, White Plains, 914-683-3662, emmasalehouse.com}

The Butcher’s Fancy

Looking for some takeout? Head over to The Butcher’s Fancy in Yonkers for some corned beef and cabbage to take home. Other delicacies include Irish boiled bacon and specialty imports from the Emerald Isle.
{961 Mclean Ave., Yonkers, 914-237-8260, butchersfancy.com}

Spillane Group Restaurants

All the Spillane restaurants—Mickey, Molly, and Maggie—have great menus for any occasion, but, as you’d expect, they go all-out for St. Patrick’s Day. Stop by Mickey Spillane’s in Eastchester for all-day corned beef and cabbage. There will be performances by the Ann Henry School of Irish Dancing as well as the New York State Pipe Band.

Men(u) Crave: Matt + Joe Kay from Cedar Street Grill

by Katie Schlientz March 5, 2015
written by Katie Schlientz
cedar street grill

{IntoxiKate Series} We’ve all been guilty of it. Sure, the restaurant has great food, but sometimes we go for things that aren’t on the menu. Maybe it’s the ambiance, maybe it’s the VIP treatment, or maybe it’s the bartender’s eyes…. Wait, what? Men(u) Crave uncovers the cutest men in the restaurant industry, moves past those good looks, and discovers why they’re drawn to food (and why women and drawn to them)!

cedar street grill

Enter: Matt and Joe Kay. The brothers behind Cedar Street Grill are always up for some great food, craft cocktails, and some good times.

10985599_401250543368659_846724290001593874_n

Matt Kay

Why do you think you were nominated as a Men(u) Crave?
I truly have no idea.  Maybe because I can cook?? 🙂

Why did you go into the restaurant industry?
I always say the business chose me, I didn’t choose it.  I started cooking in my grandma’s kitchen when I was 15.  That same year I took a busboy job in a local restaurant and fell in love with business.  I grew to work every position in about 12 different restaurants and now I have my own.  I am truly grateful to be in the position that I am in.

Why do you think Cedar Street Grill is a singles scene?
I don’t really consider it a single scene.  We try to cater to everyone.  Although, you might have that impression because my brother and I are both single.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I just started exercising so I am usually in the gym.  I love going out to restaurants and hanging with other chefs.  I am also a drummer so I do enjoy playing my drums.

All the ladies want to know: are you single?
Yes, I am single but married to my business.  I guess that’s why it is hard to have relationship but I am sure there is someone special out there.

What do you look for in a girl?
That’s a good question.  I guess I look for someone who enjoys food & wine.  That always helps.  I do like a woman who is driven and ambitious. Also a pretty smile. 🙂

If you’re impressing a girl, you are making her…

I love making a simple roasted chicken, herb roasted potatoes, and some sautéed haricot verts. Accompanied with some delicious wine of course.  It is one of my favorite meals to eat/cook.

One word that sums up your dating life.
Spontaneous

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
Smucker’s Peanut Butter & Jelly Uncrustables are my favorite snack.  You can find them in the frozen food section of your local grocery store. They are amazing and addicting.

Joe Kay

Why do you think you were nominated as a Men{u} Crave?
I think I was nominated because I truly love what I do everyday and women tend to be attracted to a guy who loves what he does for a living. Plus, I can make a girl the perfect cocktail just by talking to them for a couple minutes. Girls love sexy cocktails.

Why did you go into the restaurant industry?
Originally I got into the business to make extra money. I was unsure about what I wanted to do for a living. I came to realize that I didn’t just want to be content with my job I wanted to love it. I love the restaurant business. Working a 9 to 5 job isn’t for me.

Say you’ve got a day off—where are you going to hang?
My work schedule can be demanding so on my days off I try to see friends and family I don’t get to see a lot.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I really enjoy going to different restaurants and trying new food and cocktails.

All the ladies want to know: are you single?
Yes I am single, are you?

What do you look for in a girl?
I love cool chicks. A girl that’s happy at a five star restaurant or a dive bar is my kind of girl.

You’ve got a big date. Where are you taking her?
It depends on what she’s into. You tell me what kind of food you like and I’ll show you a great night.

One word that sums up your dating life.
Fun.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
I love playing guitar. I’ve been playing music most of my life.

IntoxiKating Special at Chutney Masala

by Katie Schlientz March 3, 2015
written by Katie Schlientz

A little over a week ago, I invited Chef Navjot Arora of Chutney Masala (Irvington) on Fork This with IntoxiKate to chat about Indian food and his restaurant. I’ve been lucky enough to have more than a few conversations with Chef Arora, and I thought it would be interesting to share some of those topics with the Westchester #FoodieNation, while dispelling some of the “myths” about Indian food. (Trust me, it’s NOT all curry.)

ForkThis022015-3

Shortly before going on air, I received an extremely humbling email from Chef Arora, which we discussed on air. In short, he created a special menu especially for the #FoodieNation made up of all IntoxiKate favorites! A #HVRW Date with Kate

While I usually visit two or thee restaurants each year during the “week,” this year I’m challenging myself (and my fellow foodies!): I plan on visiting SEVEN restaurants during the duration of #HVRW and I’m asking YOU to join me. My plans are below—I’d love to see you! If you’d like to join me, simply sign up below for the restaurant/time that works best for you. I’ll be making reservations by 2/6, so let me know by then by!

On the list:
• 105-Ten Bar & Grill: This place has been on my list, and I figured, what’s the point of restaurant week if not to try new restaurants? 🙂

• Harper’s Bar & Restaurant: I’ll take any excuse to hit up Harper’s local fare. Super stoked that the crispy Hudson Valley duck—my favorite dish—is on the menu!

• Cedar Street Grill: Matt and Joe Kay are so much fun to hang out with. Love the energy (and the roasted Brussels sprouts) at Cedar Street. If you need me, I’ll be at the bar after dinner enjoying a Haymaker.

• Nonno’s Trattoria: The Empire City Casino has so much more to offer than gambling. I’m really looking forward to the restaurant week menu and meeting their new executive chef!

• Saint George Bistro: For my French fix!

• Sonora Restaurant: I have a total foodie crush on Chef Rafael Palomino. While I’m there, I’m hoping to pick up one of his Latin-influenced cookbooks and get it signed.

• Zuppa Restaurant & Lounge: I’m heading to Zuppa for pasta! Fingers crossed the trofie twisty pasta in braised lamb ragout diced pumpkin is on the menu!
