Stop & Shop Launches Store-Wide Nutrition Navigation Program

written by Katie Schlientz

STOP & SHOP LAUNCHES GUIDING STARS®, WORLD’S FIRST STORE-WIDE NUTRITION NAVIGATION PROGRAM

Clear labeling gives consumers quick, easy-to-understand nutrition advice

[Purchase, NY – April 5, 2018] – Stop & Shop is helping customers eat healthier and save time grocery shopping with a first-of-its kind nutrition navigation program, Guiding Stars. With symbols that are visible at a glance, Guiding Stars aims to take the guesswork out of nutrition by decoding labels into one clear rating.  Available at all 410 Stop & Shop locations, over 9,000 products will feature the star ranking system that showcases “good”, “better” and “best” choices.

Guiding Stars is another example of Stop & Shop’s commitment to giving its shoppers the tools they need to quickly identify the food attributes that are important to them.

“We know that more and more of our customers are prioritizing nutrition and in fact, our research tells us that over half of Americans cook at home because the meals are healthier*,” said Julie Hersey, MS, RDN, LDN, Stop & Shop Nutritionist. “Customers can find the products they’re looking for faster and feel confident that they’re selecting the foods that are best for their families.”

Consistent with national policies including Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate, the Guiding Stars rating will be shown on products based on the below system:

–      1 star means an item has GOOD nutritional value

–      2 stars mean an item has BETTER nutritional value

–      3 stars mean an item has THE BEST nutritional value

If no Guiding Stars symbol is shown, the item is either not nutritionally recommended, new to the program and hasn’t been rated yet, is less than five calories such as water or tea, is a dietary supplement, medical food such as baby formula or the product does not have nutrition information available.

The Guiding Stars program is a simple way to provide clear answers and speed up the grocery shopping process. “Label reading can be intimidating and time-consuming,” said Hersey.  “We’re thrilled to be giving this empowering tool to our customers to easily identify the products they want.”

For Stop & Shop customers looking to buy their groceries online to enjoy the convenience of home delivery, Guiding Stars will be featured on over 4,000 products on Peapod.com. Customers will be able to easily sort through products based on the Guiding Star rating for ease and convenience.

Chef Brian Lewis Brings Japanese-Inspired Cuisine to Westport with Oko

by Katie Schlientz April 22, 2018
written by Katie Schlientz

Westport, Conn. – Chef Brian Lewis, who brought seasonal American cooking to Westport, Connecticut with his acclaimed restaurant, The Cottage, expands his footprint in downtown Westport with his newest venture, OKO.  The Japanese inspired restaurant, located in the historic Vigilant Hose Company Firehouse at 6 Wilton Road, showcases Lewis’ innovative take on traditional Japanese cuisine and sushi, in a lively and charming atmosphere.  The restaurant will open on April 19, 2018.

“My team and I are delighted to bring OKO to the community, combining my love for Japanese cooking techniques and culture with fresh, local ingredients from Connecticut, the U.S. and the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo,” said Lewis.  “When we offered our first true Japanese-inspired dish at The Cottage – the okonomiyaki – it was met with rave reviews from our guests, and truly set into motion this real passion of mine to pursue Japanese cuisine for our next restaurant.  My vision with OKO is to offer a very accessible, fun menu for our guests of seasonally driven, Japanese-inspired cuisine that is meant to be shared, encouraging the sampling of several styles of Japanese cuisine.  Our open kitchen concept will allow guests to be educated on Japanese cooking methods, all while enjoying the experience in a relaxed, fun environment.”

The food menu at OKO will feature several styles of Japanese-influenced cuisine, including Sushi Nigiri, Sashimi and Temaki (hand rolls), as well as vegetable tempura, seasonally inspired salads and vegetable dishes, okonomiyaki, homemade tofu, hand-cut soba and ramen specialties and meat dishes from the tepinyaki grill.  A traditional Omakase menu will also be available, offering a spontaneous, multi-course menu of the chef’s choosing, as well as a “Chef’s Selection” offering of Nigiri Sushi, Sashimi or Chirashi Sashimi.  Dessert offerings will include house-made soft serve ice cream, build-your-own sundaes and crepes filled with matcha crème.

The beverage program at OKO will also celebrate the Japanese culture with seasonal, local ingredients.  A robust offering of Sake, Japanese Beer, hot and cold iced tea, matcha and wine will be offered.  Custom cocktails and Highballs will integrate traditional Japanese ingredients – sake, barley shochu, Japanese craft whiskey and matcha – with spirits including gin, brandy, rye and tequila.

Architect Rick Hoag from Frederick William Hoag Architect and Interior Designer Megan Zwick from MZ Interiors uncovered the original character of the historic firehouse, built in 1931, to create an enchanting dining space. Adorned in a post-industrial color scheme of natural ash, concrete greys and black steel, the new elements are asymmetrically juxtaposed against the symmetry of the building’s brick walls and large windows fronting Wilton Road.  Ash wood furniture and custom-made, slender wood LED lights that are strategically placed in an irregular pattern on the ceiling are completed by an ash wood and fiber cement bar that surrounds and invites a full view of the working kitchen.  A custom-designed steel and translucent resin structure is suspended above the bar, casting a soft play of light and shadow through its intricate design, inspired by the shapes of traditional Japanese scaffolding.  Featuring traditional and banquette-style seating for 34 in the main dining area, 14 bar seats, and one tucked-away high-top table for four, the atmosphere created for guests is clean, warm and sophisticated.

OKO is open Tuesday-Saturday (5pm-close) and in the coming months, will be adding Sunday service.  The restaurant will also be offering take-out in the coming weeks.

OKO accepts reservations via OpenTable.com, or by contacting the restaurant at 203-557-8404.

About Chef Brian Lewis:

Brian Lewis is one of Connecticut’s most celebrated chefs, lauded for his commitment to quality and seasonally driven American cuisine featured at his restaurant, The Cottage, as well as his love for Japanese cuisine at his newest venture, OKO.  The Cottage, based in Westport, Connecticut, was recognized with an “Excellent” review in the New York Times, after only being open for four months, commending Lewis’ sophisticated menu in a cozy setting.

Lewis was also honored in 2018 as a semi-finalist for the James Beard Awards’ Best Chef: Northeast in the 2018.

He first received national recognition as the opening Executive Chef of actor Richard Gere’s The Bedford Post Inn, a Relais & Chateaux property that featured two destination restaurants, The Barn and The Farmhouse. There, he acquired national acclaim including Esquire Magazine’s “Best New Restaurant” list in 2009, and an “Excellent” review in the New York Times for his thoughtful and consciously sourced cuisine. He launched his first solo venture in March 2012 with elm, where he was once again named to Esquire Magazine’s “Best New Restaurant” list, this time in 2012, before leaving to focus on launching The Cottage in Connecticut’s Westport neighborhood.  Lewis has had the honor of being invited to cook three dinners at the historic James Beard House in New York City, most recently in January 2017 on behalf of The Cottage.  He has made appearances on “The Martha Stewart Show” and “TODAY.”

Raised in Westchester, New York, Lewis discovered his love for cooking at a very early age. He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America with honors and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in business Management from Johnson and Wales University. Early experiences working under the guidance of legendary chefs like Jean Louis Palladin and Marco Pierre White strongly shaped Lewis’ culinary style to what it is today.

About OKO:

Film to Table at Jacob Burns

by Katie Schlientz April 19, 2018
written by Katie Schlientz

A feast for the eyes and the palate took place at the Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) Monday night with another successful Film to Table event.   The series, which brings new meaning to the phrase “dinner and a movie,” features events throughout the year that include a food-focused film screening followed by a Q&A or panel discussion with distinctive local restaurateurs, filmmakers, and more.

Monday’s sold-out Film to Table featured a screening of A Fine Line, a timely documentary in which filmmaker Joanna James explores why only 6% of head chefs and restaurant owners are women, punctuating the national conversation around equal pay, workplace harassment, parental leave, and career advancement. James juxtaposes recollections of her own single mother’s successes and struggles as a small town chef and restaurateur against insightful interviews with world-renowned chefs, including Emmy Award-winning TV Host Lidia Bastianich, Two Michelin Star Chef April Bloomfield, First Female Iron Chef Cat Cora, the Ambassador of Greek Gastronomy and celebrated Author and Chef Maria Loi, and many more.

The post-screening panel featured filmmaker Joanna James, film subject chef Valerie James, and author and Chef Maria Loi in conversation with JBFC Programmer Karen Sloe Goodman.

The special tasting reception, Celebrating Women Chefs and Greek Cuisine, followed the Q&A with a tasting menu that showcased Chef Maria Loi’s signature healthful Greek recipes; Chef Loi also hosted a book signing.

“It’s truly amazing to look back at how this event has continued to evolve and grow,” says Westchester Magazine Publisher Ralph Martinelli. “We started with a pretty basic idea: Create an event that brings together the best of the Westchester area’s restaurants, chefs, wines and foods for a week-long celebration.  What none of us could have realized was how perfect our timing was.  We caught the wave of interest in food, wine and so much more.  And that wave has turned into a gastronomic and social tsunami that we’re happy to be a part of.”

Martinelli recalled that in the beginning there were perhaps 50 wines to taste, 15 chefs participating and a modest burger tasting event.  And since then?  Some 50,000 attendees have sampled more than 1,000 fine wines from around the world. In the event’s Grand Tasting Village alone 6,000 bottles of wine have been served and 360 restaurants from across Westchester have been featured. The Thursday night Burger & Beer Blast at Kensico Dam Park has become the hottest ticket in town.  And he proudly points out that $200,000 has been raised for local charities.

For 2018, Westchester Magazine is gearing up to present the biggest and best Wine & Food Festival yet. Popular favorites like the Burger & Beer Blast, the Grand Tasting Village and Salute! A Wine Tasting Tour of Italy will be featured along with new events across the six-day extravaganza. “Our small festival has grown tremendously over the past seven years,” said Peter Kelly, Chef/Owner Xaviar’s Restaurant Group and co-founder of the event. “We’re showcasing incredibly talented chefs and delicious wines. I encourage everyone to come celebrate this amazing event.”

This year, Harrison Wine Vault will be the exclusive wine retailer. A family-owned business, the Harrison Wine Vault opened in 2011 and quickly became a favorite among wine lovers and aficionados. This tri-level store in a former bank building features the old bank vault that is now a temperature-controlled fine wine room.  The expansive and diverse wine selections are presented in a spacious 2,500-square-fooet retail shop. The store, conveniently located in downtown Harrison opposite the MetroNorth train station, draws customers from a wide area including nearby Rye and Mamaroneck.

Creative Cuisine Tastings by Top Chefs, Open Artist Studios, NEW! ArtsWestchester Triennial Exhibit Featuring Contemporary Artists of the Hudson Valley, Plus Kids Arts Activities All Offered as Part of Celebration

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (March 27, 2018) – ArtsWestchester has announced a special event to celebrate 20 years in its historic building in downtown White Plains.  The county’s leading arts advocacy nonprofit organization has put a new spin on its annual ArtsBash spring fundraiser this year by calling it Arts “Birthday” Bash. The event, which will feature food, fun and contemporary art, is scheduled for Thursday, May 17 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., followed by a Family ArtsBash celebration on Saturday, May 19.

At this year’s party, ArtsWestchester will be celebrating the transformation of the former People’s National Bank & Trust Building into a cultural hub of activity for artists and creative businesses.  Since the organization acquired 31 Mamaroneck Avenue in 1998, it has been hard at work restoring and creatively adapting the use of the nine-story cultural treasure into an arts incubator and multi-use arts center, while preserving the landmark building. For 20 years, ArtsWestchester has transformed one of the county’s first “skyscrapers” into a cultural destination filled with creative energy and arts programs serving the greater Westchester market area.

In celebration of the Arts Birthday Bash this May, ArtsWestchester has just added new signage to its building and is working to roll out new street art in front of its building as part of the 20th building birthday celebration.

This year’s Arts Birthday Bash on May 17th will feature delicious cuisine and cocktails from more than 30 prestigious restaurants, as well as the opportunity for guests to meet well-known artists in their open studios throughout the historic building. Petrone explains, “Food is art — the culinary arts.  So, it only makes sense for the two to come together on this great night. Art comes in so many styles and forms, and ArtsWestchester recognizes this. It’s why their work is so vital to the community.”

Leslie Lampert of Café of Love, John Crabtree of Crabtree’s Kittle House and JR and Angela Morales of Sofrito have stepped up as Arts Birthday Bash Cuisine Chairs and will give lead direction on the food offerings.

In addition, ArtsWestchester’s newest gallery exhibit, the “ArtsWestchester Triennial,” will provide the backdrop of the event, featuring artwork by contemporary artists of the Hudson Valley nominated by top museum directors and gallerists.

“The transformation of our downtown home from a vacant bank building to a vibrant arts center and incubator is an occasion that has stirred the creativity of top chefs who are preparing tastings for ArtsBash guests,” said Janet Langsam, CEO of ArtsWestchester.

Some of the dining destinations participating in this year’s Thursday evening Arts Birthday Bash include:

Morgan Chase; Kenneth J. Gould, Esq.; Arts Patrons Emily & Eugene Grant; the late Bill McNamee; State Assemblywoman Amy Paulin; George Ross of J.P. Morgan Chase and Architect John Sullivan.

The Saturday after the party, families and children of all ages are encouraged to participate in a day of fun at Family ArtsBash on Saturday, May 19, from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Kids can partake in a variety of hands-on art activities and artist-led workshops. Food Bank for Westchester Changes its Name to Feeding Westchester

by Katie Schlientz March 22, 2018
written by Katie Schlientz

Leslie Gordon, CEO of Feeding Westchester (formerly known as Food Bank for Westchester) unveils sign with organization’s new name.

Organization says, ‘Feeding Westchester’ Better Reflects its Mission to End Hunger in Westchester

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (March 22, 2018) –  Food Bank for Westchester today announced that it has changed its name to Feeding Westchester. The county’s leading nonprofit hunger-relief organization said it made this change to better communicate not just who they are, but what they do and who they serve.

“Our name is changing, but our mission, our work, and our board and staff remains the same,” said Leslie Gordon, President and CEO, adding that the organization is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Feeding Westchester’s mission is to end hunger in Westchester County. With that said, the new name reflects how the organization helps to “feed” Westchester residents. As the heart of a network of more than 300 partners, Feeding Westchester sources and distributes food, and other resources, to towns throughout Westchester.

Gordon continued, “We are Westchester’s largest hunger relief program and are responsible for 95 percent of food provided to those who are hungry in the county. We efficiently invest in storage infrastructure – like freezers, refrigerators and trucks – so that our agency partners don’t have to, freeing them to focus on serving our neighbors who are hungry.  We also safely recover nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste – and we are truly committed to providing people with good, nutritious meals. We make feeding Westchester possible.”

Developed by national branding experts and supported by extensive research, the new brand strategy connects Feeding Westchester to the national fight against hunger.

“Through our network, we feed people who are hungry in every single town in Westchester. We tackle hunger from all angles,” Gordon said.

Despite its affluent reputation, Westchester nevertheless continues to face “hidden hunger” throughout the county. One in five people in Westchester are hungry – including 1 in 3 children. According to Gordon, Feeding Westchester is in the second year of its strategic plan, and already on track to reach its goal of distributing 10.5 million pounds of food annually by 2021 – which is the equivalent of 9.3 million meals.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank our supporters, staff and volunteers who have built and strengthened our organization over the years,” said Maria Bronzi, Feeding Westchester Board Chairperson. “Our name change is an exciting opportunity to better share the role we play in feeding Westchester.”

In announcing the new brand today, the organization received support from many elected officials.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “Feeding Westchester is an excellent name for an organization that does just that. The work they do serves the often forgotten residents of our County who work hard to feed themselves and their families, and rely on the help this organization can provide. While the last 30 years were successful under their previous name, I look forward to seeing the great work yet to come.”

Chair of the Board of Legislators Ben Boykin said, “I am pleased to be joining the Food Bank of Westchester for this major announcement. The organization’s name now will be synonymous with its mission — Feeding Westchester. That’s important, because despite our great blessings, as many as 20 percent of Westchester residents go hungry — one out of every five of our friends and neighbors.  Feeding Westchester is the driving force for getting food to organizations to sustain our residents and help alleviate hunger, and now everyone will know that by its name. I wish Feeding Westchester continued success as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.”

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, said: “The City of Yonkers has always been in complete support of Food Bank for Westchester’s mission. This name change is just another step in the right direction. The new name, Feeding Westchester, accurately describes the great work that they do as the leading hunger relief organization in the county, delivering 95 percent of the food that we see at soup kitchens, food pantries and other community agencies. We look forward to continuing to work with Feeding Westchester to bring an end to hunger in our neighborhoods.”

White Plains Mayor Tom Roach, added: “Feeding Westchester is such a valuable Westchester resource. The good work they do and the lives they positively impact every day are an asset to our community.”
