chowdamadness

Westport, CT – March 6, 2018 –  Chowdafest presented by Stop & Shop, started their fun Chowda Madness this week.  “All our Chowdafest fans seem to hoop it up every fall at our event so we thought why not hoop it up now when everyone is about to fill out brackets for the upcoming NCAA college basketball tournament” said Jim Keenan, event director.  All the restaurants over the past 10 years were ranked by their achievements (1st, 2nd or 3rd) and the top four ranked restaurants in each of the four competition categories were entered.

This online “one & done” competition will take place over the next four weeks:

  • Round One – Sweet 16:  March 5 to March 11 at midnight
  • Round Two – Great Eight:  March 12 to March 18 at midnight
  • Round Three – Final Four:  March 19 to March 25 at midnight

Fans of these restaurants and their chowders can vote as often as every 5 minutes at www.Chowdafest.org/ChowdaMadness.  The most votes per match-up will move the winning restaurant into the next round.

Bar Zepoli Offers a Fresh Culinary Outlook Amid a Stunning Backdrop

by Katie Schlientz March 6, 2018
written by Katie Schlientz
bar zepoli
February 6, 2018, Stamford, CT: This is Bar Zepoli, an Italian-American restaurant and gathering place deeply rooted in an Italian immigrant culture that continues to redefine this most beloved cuisine. Located on the corner of Broad Street and “Little Summer Street” in downtown Stamford, CT, Bar Zepoli opened in September of 2017, offering a multi-sensory experience from its striking décor to its vibrant and seasonal menu.

Grand windows adorned with red velveteen drapes, rustic wooden rafters, and a cathedral ceiling envelope multiple dining rooms, a social bar scene, eclectic artwork by artist Leigha Zimmer atop the exposed brick walls, dark wood furnishings, and a private wine room.

Executive Chef Antonio Greco’s impressive restaurant portfolio includes the popular Crabtree’s Kittle House in Chappaqua, NY, and ultimately his family owned and operated Italian restaurants in New Jersey. Punctuated by Greco’s own Italian-American upbringing (emigrated from Acri, Italy to the US in the early 70s) and the family recipes and traditions that go along with that, Bar Zepoli customers are treated to a symphony of dishes that embrace the old and the new.  Menu highlights include; small plates consisting of house rolled arancini with crabmeat and tallegio, served with piquillo pepper aioli and avocado mint mousse; charred octopus with organic heirloom tomatoes, roasted fingerling potatoes, with a balsamic and honey reduction; and braised brisket noisettes in a garlic demi-glace.

Thin crust pizzas, a “classico” of crushed plum tomato, fresh basil and grande mozzarella, and a more untraditional version topped with caramelized onion, spicy soppressata, sweet potato, goat cheese, fresh garden herbs, and mozzarella are customer favorites. Comforting pasta dishes include; pan seared jumbo Atlantic prawns and gnocchi in a spicy arrabbiata sauce with melted leeks and broccoli florets; and farm-raised slow roasted Angus ragu with brown butter and carrots, Grana Padano, over orecchiette. Seasonal land and sea entrées are currently featuring flavorful preparations of 23-hour slow braised short ribs with sautéed broccolini and roasted potato puree; 24 Green Circle Farms free-range chicken scarpiello with crumbled Deyulio sausage, San Marzano tomatoes, peppers, and onions, over soft polenta; and pancetta pesto wrapped Atlantic cod with white truffle fingerling potatoes, haricot vert, and a gremolata beurre blanc.

Desserts are decadent incarnations of Italian specialties such as; handmade “zepoli” potato donuts coated in cinnamon sugar; a cannoli duo of chocolate cream and cherry almond whipped ricotta fillings; and an over-the-top spumoni sundae with pistachio and Fabbri cherry ice cream topped with candied pistachios, Italian chocolate, and a Fabbri cherry on top.  A curated wine list of global varietals, craft beer selections, creative cocktails, and premium spirits round out the beverage program.

Bar Zepoli executes seamless private dining affairs and catered events for large groups. Managed by seasoned hospitality professionals, private functions are further enhanced by the restaurant’s talented Chef, versatile and creative menu offerings, numerous dining room options, and stellar service.

El Segundo

I will warn you—it’s going to be hard to choose one of Chef Carlos Baez’s dishes featuring flavors from across the world. But we can steer you forward in drink selections—during Saturday’s City Limits performance by Matt Fernandez, you can throw back $3 shots of Jägermeister or Jameson or enjoy $8 regular or spicy Margaritas.

Johnny Utah’s

Headed to Johnny Utah’s to experience City Limits? You’ll want to get their early. Not only can you score a spot to see Badboy, Connecticut’s premier party rock cover band, but the bar is serving up $5 cocktails until the performance starts at 10 p.m.

Make it a boozy brunch! While Glenn Roth strums the strings at Beach House, you can sip on a complimentary glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir. Not a fan of the vino? No worries. Norwalk “City Grub” to Feature Enticing Prix Fixe Menus

January 2, 2018, Norwalk, CT: Norwalk Now, the collaborative marketing group comprised of businesses throughout Norwalk’s urban core, is gearing up for their first self-produced event, Norwalk City Limits. Music enthusiasts can look forward to a 5-day long music scheduled featuring local talent performing at participating Norwalk Now restaurants, shops, and attractions. The event, designed to showcase area musicians, create local foot traffic, and relieve cabin fever, is the first in a series of innovative events that have Norwalk businesses working together to promote their town, each other, and all that Norwalk has to offer.

“Norwalk Now takes every form of exposure, including social media, print and digital platforms, direct marketing to consumers, and events, and works together as a cohesive team to further promote individual businesses, as well as the town of Norwalk as a whole, “says Norwalk Now Director Linda Kavanagh, “Norwalk City Limits is a massive 5-day schedule of live music performances which embraces all styles of music from acoustic rock, pop, jazz, fusion, country, and even children’s music.”

Joining favorite live music destinations such as Peach’s Southern Pub & Juke Joint which will feature acoustic originals by Griffin Anthony, and the recently opened Wall Street Theater that will have Tom “The Suit” Forst, the Jason Gisser Band, and the Doug Wahlberg Band rockin’ the house, consumers will have the opportunity to enjoy the guitar genius of Glenn Roth at The Spread, Jazz Brunch at Washington Prime with Bob Stewart and the New Orleans Beatniks, family entertainment at The Maritime Aquarium with Music Together Of Fairfield County, and indie/folk music from the captivating singer-songwriter Maribyrd at Killer B – just a sampling from the over 30 scheduled performances.

Adding to the music-filled week, Norwalk Now restaurants will offer “City Grub”, promotional prix fixe menus for the ultimate dinner and a show experience.  Norwalk City Limits will also hold a social media contest in search of spirited City Limits Groupies. All Taste, No Travel: Explore Street Food at El Segundo

by Katie Schlientz December 20, 2017
written by Katie Schlientz

There is no doubt the culinary world has been influenced by pop culture. As the Food Network became a household name, chefs’ profiles increased dramatically, shedding some serious light on the previously-mysterious activities of the back of the house. New restaurants popped up with windows into the kitchen, where diners get an inside look at the life of a professional food prep, the craziness of the Friday dinner rush fully exposed. Local chefs became mini-celebrities.

The rise of social media has certainly helped things along. Encouraging collaborations from the restaurant next door, to the restaurant across the globe, chefs have access to a plethora of food photos to reference for inspiration and innovation. We, of course, reap the benefits and add to the conversation along the way.

At a time when we are one Instagram search away from exploring some of the best foods from across the word, street food has peaked our interest, influencing food trends for the past few years.

It also influenced a group of local guys who are well-known for stirring up serious fun up in SoNo. With their first restaurant—The Spread—under their belt, Chris Hickey, Andrey Cortes, Chris Rasile, and Shawn Longyear opened up El Segundo in 2016, an exploration of street foods from across the world.

I chat with Chris Hickey about the El Segundo concept, collaborating on Norwalk Now, and opening The Spread in Greenwich.

Take it from a gal who has eaten at countless restaurants from across the county—finding a chef who can cook dishes from the Dominican Republic to Germany to Vietnam (and everything in between) is a feat, but Executive Chef Carlos Baez makes it look like a breeze.

El Segundo

The Banh Mi, for example, with its braised pork, pickled daikon and carrots, jalapeños, cucumbers, and cilantro could have been picked up roadside in Vietnam. The pork pâté is an added bonus.

Chef has fun with “American” food as well, creating a fried chicken and waffle cone topped with fries, cole slaw, and spicy aioli.
