BIG NEWS for IntoxiKate!

I am pleased to announce Westchester and Fairfield’s only food talk radio show returns on 1490 WGCH Tuesdays at 6 p.m.—prime time! An extension of the IntoxiKate brand, the show explores the local restaurant scene, as well as recipes, entertaining tips, and more from local resources and top industry experts.

The first show—tomorrow November 15th—kicks off the holiday season with a focus on Thanksgiving entertaining. Guests include Claire Bertin-Lang from CBL Liquid Consulting and Steve Distler of O’Brien Estate Winery in Napa, CA. I will also interview Chef Navjot Arora on his new Irvington restaurant Sambal: Thai & Malaysian.

Starting November 29th, the annual “Edible Christmas” series begins, offering a collection of great gift ideas—and savings!—for food lovers.

You can tune in live at AM 1490 WCGH or wgch.com. After the original airtime, the interviews are available as a podcast right here on IntoxiKate.com with access to additional topic information. As always, if you have news to share or questions to ask, please send me a tweet: @KateSchlientz.

Top 6 Takeaways from the Take Back Your Health Conference

by Katie Schlientz November 11, 2016
written by Katie Schlientz
andrea beaman

Over the summer, I had a frank conversation with a nutritionist friend about some of the digestive issues I was having. She offered insight, and more importantly, help. Up to this point, I attributed these issues as a side effect from all of the food/beer/wine tasting I was doing. But when I took a break from IntoxiKate to get married—and did not shed a pre-wedding pound on a very clean eating food plan—my digestive issues worsened.

After a few tests, answering lots of questions about my eating habits, and an official visit, we determined there was a problem (more on that coming soon). While I wait for more concrete conclusions from my blood work, I was put on an “elimination diet” paired with supplements and herbs to clean out and reboot my digestive system.

Shortly after taking my initial test and before my doctor’s visit, a good friend of mine asked me to attend the Take Back Your Health Conference in Washington, D.C. Founded by Certified Holistic Health Counselor Robin Shirley, the conference focuses on helping those with chronic diseases make more educated changes in their lifestyle to improve their health. At the time I received the invite, my intention was to go for great blog fodder—a way to help spread some of the messages I learned at the conference. I had no idea how much it would change my perspective on my own digestive issues and how I live my life.

cafe of love

It’s one of my favorite times of the year—Hudson Valley Restaurant Week—and it runs Nov. 1 to the 13th. It you haven’t taken advantage of the incredible (cost-effective) opportunity to check out some of the best restaurants in the Hudson Valley, now is your chance. The Valley Table pulled together a great assortment of eateries and, as your professional restaurant recommender, I have some suggestions on where to go (and what to order!).

In Westchester, we have no shortage of spirit when it comes to Halloween. With a town literally called Sleepy Hollow (with a headless horseman) and county-wide events for the young and young at heart, there’s plenty to choose from no matter if you’re more into the historical or hysteria. Here’s a quick roundup of the best Halloween events in Westchester:

Irvington Newbie: Sambal Thai & Malaysian

by Katie Schlientz October 20, 2016
written by Katie Schlientz
sambal

Irvington is lucky. First, they received a hands-on education on Indian food  from Chef Navjot Arora. With Chutney Masala, diners got a literal taste of authentic Indian cuisine and, paired with his cooking classes and specialties geared towards the more adventurous, Arora literally schooled everyone on spices, origins of dishes, and culture from the region.

With his next venture, Arora is at it again, teaming up with Chef Lucky Thai to launch Sambal, an eatery dedicated to authentic Thai and (soon!) Malaysian cuisine.

Food Philosophy with Chef Christian Petroni

Chef Christian Petroni—chef, restaurateur and TV personality—is well-known for taking pairing his social media posts with a bit of Parmesan-encrusted humor. But the creator behind Fortina took a pause the laughs to have a heart to heart about where our food comes from during this year’s Greenwich Wine & Food Festival. While I love Christian’s sense of humor, the five minutes  he took to talk about his food philosophy was refreshing and empowering.

“This is the way we need to be shopping and cooking here in the states… What you’re putting in your family’s bodies is really of the utmost importance.”

greenwich wine and food festival

The Greenwich Wine & Food Festival featured a lineup of elite food-focused personalities—Man Versus Food’s Adam Richman, Chef Marcus Samuelsson, and our own local celebri-chef, Christian Petroni. But the thing I love most about food festivals is finding new goodies I can share with fellow foodies. This year’s GWFF had no shortage of delectable goodies, so I’ve rounded up a few of my favorites to share…

Celebrate Season 6 with Game of Thrones Cocktails

by Katie Schlientz April 24, 2016
written by Katie Schlientz
game of thrones

Season 6 of the HBO hit series Game of Thrones kicks off tonight at 9 p.m. EST, and I, for one, am looking for a lot of answers. (Say it isn’t so, Jon Snow!) Whether you are gathering friends around the TV for a viewing party or if you just need a little liquid courage to make it through the potential lost of your favorite face, I’ve got some character-inspired craft cocktails created for the occasion.

“The Crows’ Old-Fashioned”

by Tad Carducci, bartender, mixologist and co-founder of Tippling Bros.
Highlighting a rustic, old-world brandy from Chateau du Tariquet, the Crows’ Old Fashioned is rich, warming, dark and brooding. Just what one needs before going North of the Wall.

Ingredients:

•1.5 oz. Tariquet VSOP Armagnac

•1 oz. Amaro Lucano

•2 dashes Green Chartreuse

•.5 oz. simple syrup

•star anise

•orange peel

Directions:

Stir all ingredients with ice and serve in an Old Fashioned glass.  Garnish with star anise and orange peel.

 “The Targaryen”

by Ryan Judson, Brand Ambassador, Usquaebach Blended Scotch Whisky

With a base of Usquaebach whisky, the name of which translates to “the water of life,” this satisfying mixture of ‘blonde’ ingredients reflects the Targaryen prosperous bloodline.

Ingredients:

•2 oz Usquaebach Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky

•5 oz Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur

•5 oz black tea – honey syrup (1 part raw honey, 1 part black tea)

•1 Dash aromatic bitters

•Lemon peel

Directions:

Combine all ingredients and stir with ice. Strain into rocks glass over large ice cube. Garnish with lemon peel.

“The White Walker”

Ice cold and eerily foggy, the haunting cocktail’s blue tint from the London No. 1 gin channels the piercing eyes of the creatures beyond the wall.

Ingredients:

•2 oz London No. 1 Gin

•.5 oz Triple Sec

•.5 oz Fresh lemon juice

•1 egg white

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in shaker and shake with ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass.

“Blood of the Dragon”

by Emmanuel Pena, Domaine Select Wine & Spirits

Sweet, yet herbal, this warming punch recipe for 20 thirsty Thrones fans is sure to get the watch party off on the right foot. Like Daenerys, it’s seductive yet dangerous; a few too many glasses and you may just find yourself attempting to bond with mythical creatures.

Ingredients:

•1 750mL bottle Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva rum

•15 oz of lemon Juice

•10 oz rosemary & thyme simple syrup  (Combine 2 parts white sugar, 1 part water, 1 sprig of thyme, 1 sprig of rosemary in large bot and bring to a boil. Let stand until cool)

•5 oz of honey

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a punch bowl with ice. Ladle into punch glasses. Garnish each glass with sprigs of rosemary and thyme.

Prefer beer? Check out Ommegang’s Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms Hoppy Wheat Ale.

“Pay Your Debts”

Elegant and sophisticated, yet surprising stout (this cocktail is made entirely of boozy ingredients), this is a drink well suited for a Lannister, and Lannister always pays his debts.

Ingredients:

•1.5 oz. G’Vine Floraison gin

•1 oz. Vermouth Royal Rouge

•3 dashes Fernet Branca

•orange twist

Directions:

Combine all ingredients and stir with ice. Strain into a classic martini glass. Garnish with orange twist.

game of thrones

“The Red Comet”

Fizzy and light red in color, “The Red Comet” channels its namesake in appearance and in theme. With a base of the “legendary biru”, this cocktail, much like the Red Comet of the show, is a sign of epic things to come (though admittedly, a high-octane night with friends is a much more favorable prophecy than the impending danger of dragons)Â

Ingredients:

• 1 bottle Sapporo light beer

•.5 oz. Vodka

•.5 oz Campari

•Orange slice

Directions:

Pour vodka and Campari in glass over ice. Top off glass with Sapporo light. Garnish with an orange slice.

cedar street grill

Donna Monaco Olsen, coordinator for the Taste of Westchester Continuing Education program here to share some “foodie” news about one of this program’s participating restaurants. Cedar Street Grill is located in the Dobbs Ferry downtown offering fresh comfort food with many interesting twists. Chef Matt Kay’s passion for creating specialty dishes began as he watched his grandmother (a former restaurateur herself) cook Italian delicacies. At his restaurant, celebrating their 5th anniversary in July, he treats everyone like family. His menu is more mature after 5 years and shows his range of talent. Watch for upcoming specials to help them celebrate this most momentous milestone.
