IntoxiKate Tips to Enjoy the Westchester Magazine Wine and Food Festival

by Katie Schlientz June 4, 2015
written by Katie Schlientz

Westchester Magazine‘s Wine and Food Festival kicked off last night with the Bloomingdale’s Fashion, Food, and Wine event. If you missed the event, no worries—you can find pictures of Kathie Lee Gifford singing Happy Birthday to Chef Peter Kelly on the mag’s Instagram account.

Tickets are still available to the festivals two major events—the Burger and Beer Blast and Grand Tasting Village, both hosted at the Kensico Dam Plaza. The Burger and Beer Blast features over 30 local restaurants and food trucks and kicks off tonight at 6 p.m. The Grand Tasting Village, a culinary expo with food from over 40 local restaurants, also focuses on the area’s top vendors from the area’s farmers markets on Saturday, June 6th at 12 p.m. (Oh, and did I mention the chef cooking demos?)

The events are both a food-lover’s dream, but can also be a bit overwhelming to tackle all of that eating in one event. Here’s a few IntoxiKate tips that’ll not only help you eat your way through the festival, but enjoy yourself as well:

1. Purchase your tickets ahead of time.
To attend both events, you’ll need to purchase tickets ahead of time. Visit westchestermagazine.com to grab yours ($65 per person for the Burger and Beer Blast; $75 per person for the Grand Tasting Village).

2. Arrive early…
Or at least on time. That way, you’ll secure a great parking spot and enjoy the food before the crowd rolls in. Trust me, it gets busy!

3. Designate a driver.
No doubt about it—these events are a good time. The beer and wine will be flowing, so it’s important to designate a driver so everyone gets home safe and sound.

4. Go with a group and share with your foodie friends.
Sure the sliders are small at the Burger and Beer Blast—but there’s THIRTY to try. Bring a plastic fork to cut those babies in half or quarters, and share those bites with friends.

Fair_GreenBeans

5. Pace yourself.
Thursday and Saturday’s events have a lot to offer. Take a quick survey around to see what you don’t want to miss. Hit those options first, and then make your way to other tables.

6. Stay hydrated.
Drink the H2O. Yes, there’s beer. And wine. And Slovenia vodka! But make sure you’re taking sips of water to wash everything down.

7. TALK to the chefs.
Ok, here’s where I hop up on my soapbox. I’ve had the opportunity to be on both sides of the table at food events—I’ve been a guest and handed out plates. It’s so frustrating when people don’t even make eye contact, snap up a plate, and walk off. The participating chefs and staff work hard to create dishes for the event (on top of their regular daily restaurant tasks) and are shelling out time and money to be there. Take a second to talk to them, learn about the restaurant and ask questions about the food you’re eating. Trust me, once you hob nob with the best of them, you’ll have much more fun, and have a better appreciation for the food you’re eating.

SOWE Festival

8. Collect business cards.
Between the two events, there are over 70 restaurants and vendors involved. It’s easy to lose track of the dishes you love, so make sure to pick up a business card at the table and write down the name of the dish you loved as a friendly reminder. That way, you can visit the eateries you’re dying to try or revisit post-festival.

9. Be social.
Share your favorite dishes with Westchester Magazine and IntoxiKate on social media sites like Instagram and Twitter.

BurgerBeerBlast

10. Say hello.
I’ll be on the scene at both events, so if you see me, make sure to say hi! I can introduce you to some of my favorites. (Hey, it’s what I do!)

Relax the Healthy Way with Pure Via Spa Water Recipe

by Katie Schlientz June 3, 2015
written by Katie Schlientz
Pure Via

If you’ve tuned into Fork This with IntoxiKate (airing Monday through Friday from 12 to 1 p.m. on Newstalk 1230 WFAS) lately, you know we’ve been chatting about food companies labeling items as “all-natural” and “non-GMO.” With the growing number of consumers actively searching out these products, and with the New York Times reporting about the government creating labeling standards, I thought it was time to look into a healthier option to sweeteners for the coffee and teas I drink on a daily basis.

When Pure Via® sent samples my way and I tasted the sweetener—available in just stevia and stevia blends with raw cane sugar—I had to invite Bill Bueher, Vice President of Food Service Sales and Marketing, on the show to talk more. You can listen to our chat here (check for the June 3rd interview).

If you tasted other stevia-based sweeteners before, you may have thought the sweetener had a slightly bitter taste—that’s thanks to the natural taste of the stevia plant. (Check out these fun facts about stevia courtesy of The Huffington Post.) Pure Via® uses a higher grade of stevia, so the product offers a smoother, cleaner taste. While it definitely sweetens my coffee the perfect amount, it doesn’t change the actual flavor of my favorite cup of joe (which I love).

I’m officially a believer, and until this product is offered by every restaurant I frequent, I’m carrying around a few packets to sweeten my post-dinner coffee or tea. If you’re interested in picking up some Pure Via® of your own, check out your local grocer (it’s carried by most retailers). Once you’ve picked up a bit, you can whip up a batch of their fruit and cucumber infused spa water with the recipe below.

Pure Via® Spa Water

(Makes 3 gallons/48 Servings)

INGREDIENTS
2 cucumbers
2 red apples
2 yellow apples
2 oranges
2 lemons
3 (2.4g) lemon powder packets
1 1/2 tsp Pure Via® stevia
3 gallons water

DIRECTIONS
1. Wash the cucumber, apples, lemons, and oranges. Leave the rind and skin on all of the fruits and cucumber. Cut apples into quarters and cut lemons, oranges and cucumbers into circle slices.

2. Place all fruit and cucumbers into about two gallons of cold water. Stir in packets of lemon powder and Pure Via® stevia. Allow fruit and vegetables to remain in the water for five to ten hours, or overnight.

3. Before serving, add one more more gallon of water to the flavor infused mixture. Serve with ice for single servings or store in a three-gallon cold beverage dispenser for self-serving.

Enjoy a Staycation at the Hyatt House in White Plains

by Katie Schlientz June 1, 2015
written by Katie Schlientz

It’s no secret I enjoy sharing what I love. Whether it’s a post on the site, interviewing a chef on Fork This with IntoxiKate (NOW broadcasting 12-1 p.m. on AM 1230 WFAS), or sharing a little social love on Instagram, I can’t help but pass along a great dish or experience. Restaurant recommendations: it’s what I do.

So when the Hyatt House in White Plains asked me to pass along recommendations for their guests, I couldn’t say no. While it was tough to narrow down the list of restaurants I could list for a little night out on the town, I was also asked to provide a few shopping and attraction recommendations as well. Thinking about the Hyatt House clientele, and also considering both the business and family-oriented guests, I came up with the following options (with a few IntoxiKate tips to boot):

FOOD & DRINK

42 The Restaurant
IntoxiKate Tip: Make your reservations in advance to pair your dinner with the spectacular sunset.
1 Renaissance Square, White Plains, 914-761-4242, www.42TheRestaurant.com

Wolfert’s Roost
IntoxiKate Tip: Make sure to hit the wine store before you head out—The Roost is BYOB.
100 Main St., Irvington, 914-231-7576, www.wolfertsroostirv.com

Fig & Olive
IntoxiKate Tip: If you’re visiting Sunday through Thursday, a prix fixe dinner is available for $35 per person, offering delicious options from their seasonal menu.
696 White Plains Rd., Scarsdale, 914-725-2900, www.figandolive.com

L’Inizio
IntoxiKate Tip: L’inizio also gets creative with their cocktail list—the “Barrels & Bites” menu features spirits aged (and sometimes infused with flavors) in American charred oak barrels for two weeks. Pair the octopus salad with the spicy basil margarita!
698 Saw Mill River Rd., Ardsley, 914-693-5400, www.liniziony.com

Hastings Tea
IntoxiKate Tip: Experience a little jet lag? Try a cup of the herbal spicy mint tea. The herbal blend is excellent for headaches, fights fatigue and stress, and helps with digestive problems.
235 Main St., White Plains, 914-428-1000, www.hastingstea.com

SHOPPING

Kensico Soap Bar
IntoxiKate Tip: The “Breakfast Bar” olive oil soap leaves skin feeling silky smooth and smells good enough to eat (but  would advise against it!).
660 Columbus Ave., Thornwood, 914-579-2033, www.kensicosoapbar.com

Chocolations
IntoxiKate Tip: Picking up chocolate as a gift? Simply ask Maria to wrap it for you!
Chocolations: 607 East Boston Post Rd., Mamaroneck, 914-777-3600, www.chocolations.com

Weezie D
IntoxiKate Tip: Weezie D has a second location in Rye!

Ridge Hill Shopping Plaza
IntoxiKate Tip: Some shops and eateries will validate your parking! Make sure to inquire when you pop in.

Best Places to go for Easter in Westchester

by Katie Schlientz March 30, 2015
written by Katie Schlientz
intoxikate

Is this year flying by, or is it just me? A few weeks ago, it was March 1st, and now we’re quickly approaching Easter Sunday. If you haven’t made your reservations yet, here’s a quick roundup of some of the best places to go for Easter in Westchester:

farmer and the fish

For the kiddos:

Celebrating Easter Sunday with younger children in tow? Check out Farmer & The Fish’s brunch, running from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. ($59 per adult; $35 per child). Parents can feast on the raw bar—including Cape Cod oysters, Florida shrimp and crab claws—while the young ones hunt for Easter eggs on the farm (hunt starts at 12:30). There are lots of goodies to go around for both the young and young at heart! Call ahead of time to make reservations.
{Farmer & The Fish: 100 Titicus Rd., North Salem, 914-617-8380, www.farmerandthefish.com}

fig and olive

Brunch with a Bunch:

Scarsdale’s Fig & Olive offers a three-course brunch for $40 per person. The eatery’s larger dining room, prix fixe menu, and easy parking make it the perfect place to dine with a group on the larger side. Think the fig gorgonzola tartlet and provence roasted chicken, to everything in between. Upgrade the flavor and order a round of their signature crostinis to share for the table (not included on the prix fixe).
{Fig & Olive: 696 White Plains Rd., Scarsdale, 914-725-2900, www.figandolive.com}

Moderne Barn Armonk

A La Carte Brunch:

Chef Ethan Kostbar created a menu of brunch specials at Armonk’s Moderne Barn, but diner beware—it will be hard to choose between the chocolate hazelnut and banana stuffed French toast ($14) and the Mediterranean omelet with prosciutto, spinach, baby artichokes and fresh mozzarella ($15). Brunch runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; the regular dinner menu is available from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dinner specials are also available.
{Moderne Barn: 430 Bedford Rd., Armonk, 914-730-0001, www.modernebarn.com}

benjamin steakhouse

Traditional Favorite:

If you think Easter, and immediately your mouth waters for lamb, make your reservations at Benjamin Steakhouse. Rack of lamb is included on their prix fixe menu ($54.95 per person), as well as spring pea soup, Chiliean sea bass, rib eye steak and a variety of their desserts.
{Benjamin Steakhouse: 610 Hartsdale Rd., Hartsdale, 914-428-6868, www.benjaminsteakhouse.com}

Easter Lunch:

Breaking tradition, and looking to celebrate a little bit differently this year? Check out Sonora‘s lunch menu, running from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The three-course menu ($30 per person) has Latin favorites like duck confit empanadas, ceviche, pan seared branzino and paella.

Hudson Valley Restaurant Week: Cedar Street Grill

by Katie Schlientz March 24, 2015
written by Katie Schlientz
cedar street grill

Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (#HVRW) is a great opportunity to not only visit new eateries, but also some favorites. I love the energy at Cedar Street Grill. The entire staff—from Chef Matt Kay and his ‘spirited’ brother (and co-owner) Joe to Jimmy, the server who helped us make our selections for the evening—is always professional and friendly, but also very personable and fun.

cedar street grill
A bunch of my girlfriends and I went on a Wednesday—trust me, with these Men(u) Crave, they needed no convincing—to also partake in the $1 oyster special running every week.

cedar street grill
Now I mentioned that Joe Kay was ‘spirited’ before, and that’s because this mega-mixologist has yet to make a cocktail I don’t like. The “ready, aim, fire” (picture above) was a quick sneak peek at one of the new spring drinks available at the bar. (Can’t wait for the entire preview!)

cedar street grill
I couldn’t pick between two of my Cedar Street favorites for the first course, so I talked one of my dining partners into splitting them with me. First up, the beer-battered fried pickles, served with a roasted pepper remoulade (regularly $8) which did not disappoint!

cedar street grill
Chef Matt also makes these ridiculously amazing roasted Brussels sprouts with almonds and bacon that I pretty much can’t live without, so these certainly didn’t go to waste (regularly $9).

cedar street grill
I’ve been on the hunt for the best fried chicken in Westchester, and Cedar Street Grill has a strong competitor with their buttermilk battered chicken served with lemon, herbs, and a killer Siracha maple syrup (a pretty sweet kick!).

Hudson Valley Restaurant Week: 105-Ten Bar & Grill

by Katie Schlientz March 23, 2015
written by Katie Schlientz
105-Ten Bar and Grill

Just before the start of restaurant week, Executive Chef Eddis Martinez swung by the WFAS studio to chat all things Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (#HVRW). While he was listening to my monologue in the first few minutes of the show, he created his restaurant week menu. Once he revealed that in the interview, I couldn’t help but visit his restaurant, 105-Ten Bar & Grill, to see what he came up with (and to see if anything I mentioned helped inspire him!).

My first time at 105-Ten, I headed there for lunch and was pleased to see that the Briarcliff Manor bar and grill was hopping. With not a lot of restaurant options in the area, it was clear the place has quickly evolved into a neighborhood favorite; most diners were friendly with each other, exchanging hellos.

105-Ten Bar and Grill

I took a look at the HVRW menu online before I headed in, and was surprised to find this dish on the copy of the lunch menu ($20.95) I received in house. I selected the fried avocado with chipotle and mango salsa. When placed in front of me, I almost mistook the dish as fried pickle spears. When bite, and the creamy avocado flavor came through. I only wish the dish was plated differently; the components worked well together with the smoky kick of the chipotle and the sweet mango, but it was hard to get a bite of everything at once.

105-Ten Bar and GrillThe pork belly lettuce wraps were my main course, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on them! Chef Martinez discussed the dish in great deal on the show, and it left my mouth watering. The saltiness of the pork belly worked well with the pickled vegetable slaw, and the bib lettuce served as a strong holder for the goodness inside.

105-ten bar and grillFor dessert, I went with the caramel flan, which was a very light ending to a great lunch.

I’m glad I checked the restaurant out during #HVRW, but I would definitely like to return to try some of the 105-Ten Bar & Grill favorites I heard so much about before going. The lobster grilled cheese ($18), tuna tacos ($17), and braised short ribs ($20) all looked delish on paper and were highly recommended.
