Sip Like a Queen: Lyndhurst High Tea

lyndhurst high tea

**everything’s coming up roses**

Is it too early to be thinking about next weekend? I’ve got a confession—I’ve been thinking about April 6-7th since I visited the Guest Cottage at Lyndhurst for a sneak peek at the Flower Show’s High Tea. In between interview takes with News 12’s Lisa LaRocca (love her!), I was able to snap a few photos and chat with Saint George Bistro’s Chef Chris Vergara and Michelle Adams (Hastings-on-Hudson) about their contribution to the Show.

While you can get a glimpse of the design arrangements created by over a dozen of Westchester’s finest florists within the rooms of the historic mansion, I think the cherry on the top of this event is the High Tea. My food fanaticism aside, who wouldn’t want tickets with Vergara and Adams at the helm? These two have created the restaurants of my dreams AND celebrate food experiences of days past with fresh perspective—from cocktail hours to cooking classes to (you guessed it) high tea.

The Lyndhurst High Tea is hosted by Saint George Bistro and Seasons On The Hudson and takes place in Lyndhurst’s unique and charming estate cottage. Tucked between the beautiful seating, fine china, and silver teapots, you can find the restaurant’s scrumptious tea sandwiches, canapes, desserts, and Teagevity Tea.

$150 includes food, a glass of sparkling wine, tea, and gratuity, as well as entry to the Flower Show and Antiques Show. Grab those tickets now: Lyndhurst.org/flowershow

Support Local Businesses Affected by the Tappan Zee Bridge Demolition Postponement

by Katie Schlientz January 10, 2019

tappan zee bridge demolition

Restaurants with riverviews—Pier 701 Restaurant & Bar, Rivertown Taphouse, The View on the Hudson, Sambal Thai & Malay, Half Moon, and Hudson Farmer & the Fish—worked very hard this week to create community events commemorating the history—the Tappan Zee Bridge demolition. With many locations quickly filling up with reservations, ingredients were ordered and food was prepped.

This afternoon, the construction company behind the demolition of the bridge made an announcement they were postponing demolition due to ‘high winds’ Saturday morning. A new announcement is scheduled for tomorrow, announcing the new date.

The postponed destruction of the bridge affects our small businesses. Watch the quick video below to learn how you can flip the switch and HELP.

Chutney Masala Teams Up with Feeding Westchester to serve free Indian-inspired Thanksgiving meal to Westchester Residents in Need

by Katie Schlientz November 20, 2018
written by Katie Schlientz

All are Welcome at Chutney Masala Indian Bistro for Thanksgiving Lunch Thursday

Irvington, NY—Chutney Masala’s Chef Navjot Arora has partnered with Feeding Westchester to serve an Indian-inspired Thanksgiving meal to Westchester residents in need. Meals will be served to residents of Shepards Flock, with transportation to the restaurant generously donated by Silverstar Limousine Company. However, Chutney Masala will be open to anyone who needs a meal this Thanksgiving Thursday, November 22nd from 12-2 p.m.

Chef Arora’s menu for the day includes: turkey meatballs masala, tandoori chicken wings, cumin-seasoned potatoes, house-baked naan bread, cranberry chutney with mango yogurt, and a carrot and green bean poriyal. Guests will also leave with a small gift of Indian snack mix.

“I want to showcase the Thanksgiving spirit in a slightly different way. Plus, it’s all family style,” Arora said. “It will encourage mingling and eating together.”

Last year, the co-owner and executive chef transformed his Alphabet City restaurant, Old Monk, into a soup kitchen offering a similar menu. He served over 600 turkey meatballs in a curry sauce flavored with fennel-seed powder to those in need.

For the past two years, his two Irvington eateries—Chutney Masala and Sambal Thai & Malaysian—participated in IntoxiKate’s Eating for Orange, a social media effort with Feeding Westchester to help raise awareness about the one in five people in the county who qualify as food insecure. After his participation last year, Arora decided to donate a portion of a month’s proceeds from both restaurants to Feeding Westchester. This year, he wanted to do more.

“We are so inspired by Feeding Westchester, we challenged our team to see how we could do more to help this year,” he said. “A free Thanksgiving meal was one way to help, but also to express our gratitude for all they do for the Westchester community.”

Arora, Executive Chef and co-owner, grew up in Jalandhar Punjab, India and graduated from one of the country’s most prominent culinary institutes. He then honed his skills working under master chefs for the prestigious Taj Group of Hotels in India. Arora and his wife, Anu, moved to New York City where he put to work his experience and passion for healthy Indian cuisine as the Executive Chef, for the critically acclaimed Café Spice Restaurant Group. He currently co-owns Chutney Masala, Sambal Thai & Malaysian (both in Irvington, NY), and Old Monk in NYC.

BBQ and Beats at Bobby Q’s Cue & Co

by Katie Schlientz September 5, 2018
written by Katie Schlientz

For Bobby LeRose, it first started with a “Beef and a Half Sandwich”—a pound of thinly-sliced brisket piled high on a piece of white bread. He was with his father-in-law in Kansas City, experiencing his first taste of Gates Bar-B-Q, and his whole concept of barbecue changed. He became “crazy obsessed.”

Fast forward twenty years later.

LeRose is the owner of Bobby Q’s Pit Stop in Greenwich, CT—where you can get his coveted menu options to go—and Bobby Q’s Cue & Co. in Norwalk, CT, where you’ll want to hang for a while. Here it is very clear that, In addition to barbecue, LeRose is also “music obsessed.”

Vibrant Beale Street Music Festival posters greet you in every direction of the restaurant—a welcome reprieve to the traditional BBQ and blues pairing that’s gotten a bit overplayed. A piece of Connecticut history also adorns the wall; the giant guitar you see used to be a float in a local charity parade.

Side note: LeRose handpicks every song programmed to play at the restaurant—a combination of traditional blues, New Orleans funk, bluegrass, and rock and roll—to provide his own personal touch on the atmosphere.

And while the ambiance is wonderfully unexpected, what you’re really thinking is… When are you getting to the barbecue? Buckle up, my friends, because it’s about to get saucy.

To LeRose, the geography behind barbecue is a little overrated, especially now, because “you can get great barbecue everywhere.” But what drew him to Kansas City was the melting pot of the proteins—brisket, pork, and chicken are all readily available and done well. With his restaurant-grade smoker and hickory wood, he’s making authentic barbecue with his own flavors on a variety of proteins, following tried and true methods barbecue masters have been doing for years.

Two different kinds of ribs are available—the St. Louis variety are smoked and have a dry rub, whereas the Baby Backs are marinated, slow-cooked, grilled, and sauced. Beef Brisket, Beef Burnt Ends, Pulled Pork, Pork Sausage, and Half Chicken all receive LeRose’s award-winning barbecue treatment (Gluten-free followers rejoice—all of his sauces follow into that category!). You can order all a la carte, in popular combos, or (if you’re feeding the family or dining with friends) get a taste of everything with the table platters.

Bobby Q’s also serves up other items to nosh on—the Classic BBQ Nachos, Deep-Fried Pickle Chips, and Jalapeño Stingers, you can’t help but be tempted by his innovative twist on flatbreads. Pulled pork, fried green tomatoes, pimiento cheese, pickled onions, and jalapeños adorn the Taste of Charleston. While the Idaho Dream was made for carb-lovers, with mashed potatoes, cheddar, jack, bacon, scallions, and sour cream.

Fork This with IntoxiKate: Bobby LeRose’s Chats about his love for barbecue and music.

YONKERS BREWING CO. WINS GOLD

The Local Brewing Company Was Awarded a Gold Medal at This Year’s U.S. Open Beer Championship

July 11th, 2018, YONKERS, NY – Yonkers Brewing Co.’s 914 Vienna Lager took home the gold medal at the 2018 U.S. Open Beer Championship in the Vienna category. The Ohio-based competition—the only one to include beers from professional breweries and award-winning home-brewers, and includes judges from England, Canada, and the United States—announced the winners July 9th.

914 Vienna Lager (5.3% ABV) features a fresh, full-bodied malt profile, with toasted and very lightly-roasted grain flavors for a subdued hop. It is a nice counter to all the heavily-hopped beers around these days. The lager was awarded the bronze medal in last year’s competition.

Yonkers Brewing Co. joins only four other New York State breweries—Lake Placid Craft Brewing, Spider Bite Beer Company, Blue Point Brewing, and Saranac Brewing—who took home medals during this year’s competition. 914 Vienna Lager placed ahead of Big Sexy Brewing (California) and Denver Beer Company (Colorado), who took home silver and bronze respectively.

“This is a big win for the brewery,” said John Rubbo, BrewEO of Yonkers Brewing Co. “We are happy to move up the ranks in this competition and proud to bring the gold medal back to Yonkers. This is a great testament to the changes we’re making with head brewer Ray Girard. His passion for the craft and a taste for innovation makes for very exciting beers!”

Yonkers Brewing Co. is celebrating the win with a 914 Gold Medal Dinner Tuesday, July 31st at 6:30 PM. The lager will also be featured at a beer dinner hosted by Sambal Thai & Malaysian in Irvington Thursday, August 2nd at 6:30 PM. For details about these events and to purchase tickets, please visit www.yonkersbrewing.com.

914 Vienna Lager is also currently available in six-pack cans at the brewery and most local beer suppliers.
