Where Award-Winning Food Innovation Meets Passion That Brings Distinct Flavor To The Table

Fairfield County – Dec. 2017 – On Tuesday, December 12th 2017, The Spread celebrates its five-year anniversary with another milestone – the opening of its second location at 18 W Putnam Avenue, Greenwich, CT. The collective dream of four life-long friends and now business partners, The Spread is known for its inventive dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. It has become the award-winning destination for celebrations big and small in Fairfield County. Owners Andrey Cortes, Chris Hickey, Chris Rasile, and Shawn Longyear along with partner and Executive Chef Carlos Baez, are truly honored to share the food they love and grow with more customers in the new location.

The owners, along with Executive Chef Carlos Baez, created a menu described as ‘refined world food’. Chef Baez’s innovative dishes speak through well-defined flavors that satisfy. The Spread and Baez have been acknowledged and reviewed by The Connecticut Post, Connecticut Magazine, CT Bites, Hartford Courant, Moffly Media, Greenwich Magazine, Stamford Magazine, Westport Magazine, and Serendipity Magazine, for Greenwich Wine & Food awarding Executive Chef Carlos Baez the Innovative Chef title, and naming The Spread, The Best in Overall in Excellence.

The restaurant’s growth is fueled by the team’s passion and combined decades of experience in the restaurant industry. They have taken their experiences as bartenders, managers and assistants in the kitchen and have worked hard to become the successful restaurateurs they are today. Their commitment to stay true to who they are and the things they believe in are what make The Spread so special and authentic.

Philanthropy is a core value of their mission as restaurateurs. Being involved in the community and giving back to local causes – to help animals, kids, the hungry and the environment – is a big part of why The Spread is a Fairfield County favorite.

“We are proud of our 5 years in the restaurant business and look forward to continuing to create delicious food in a lively, energetic atmosphere in both locations,” said Hickey. “It is all about a quality dining experience and an endless appreciation for our loyal regulars and new customers.”

As anticipation builds for the new location, The Spread SoNo continues to celebrate and “spread the love” with its Sunday Brunch mix your own Bloody Mary bar, Thursday-Saturday DJ dance parties, and Monday-Friday Happy Hour specials, community involvement, tailored catering and many more special events.

Craft Beer & Smoking Cocktails with Killer B in Norwalk

by Katie Schlientz November 29, 2017
written by Katie Schlientz

A dude walks into a bar and asks the bartender for a Fuzzy Baby Duck.

There’s no punchline, and it’s bound to happen at Killer B in Norwalk, where bacon, burgers, bourbon, and (you guessed it) beer rule the menu. The beer mecca is one of the only bars in Norwalk bound to have the Fuzzy Baby Ducks IPA, brewed by New England Brewing Co. out of Woodbridge, CT, on tap. And if you consider yourself a craft beer connoisseur, you’ll know just exactly how hard it is to get your hands on.

“bacon

When it comes to building the best beer program, Daniel Valesquez, general manager and beverage boss, focuses on a delicate balancing act, offering traditional craft beers, but also tapping exciting small batches new to the area and market. (And, of course, working in a variety of IPAs, heavier stouts, and everything in between.)

While IPAs can take up to 70% of his beer list (we are in New England, after all!), Valesquez says the popularity of the trending style is continuing as brewmasters experiment with flavors like citrus and florals.

To read more, check out my blog post dedicated to Killer B on the Norwalk Now website. Norwalk Now is Norwalk in real time — the heartbeat of a New York City suburb featuring the vibrant retail, dining, entertainment, and recreational lifestyle of a thriving coastal community.

Smoking Cocktails at Killer B in Norwalk

In addition to the robust beer list, Killer B is also known for their craft cocktails, often using trending tricks and tips to enhance the flavors of the bourbon-based cocktails.

by Katie Schlientz November 28, 2017

ratatouille

With Thanksgiving behind us, I’m officially in the giving mood. And I’ll admit, I’ve been pretty inspired by local businesses around us. From Chutney Masala and Sambal Thai & Malaysian closing for Thanksgiving so their team can offer a hot meal to those in need at their sister restaurant, Old Monk, in NYC to Bonnie Saran and her collection of “Littles” offering a free Thanksgiving buffet to those in need right here in Westchester, it’s amazing to see how many local businesses are actively giving back to the community.

Knowing my foodie friends as I do, I know you’ll also be inspired by the amazing efforts of those around us. This Giving Tuesday, I’m highlighting some local efforts YOU can get involved with, paying it forward. This holiday season, support those who support others. Invest in those who invest in others. Angry Orchard Cider Company

YOU CAN HAVE YOUR DOUGHNUT AND SPIKE IT TOO ON NATIONAL APPLE CIDER DAY, NOV. 18TH

Angry Orchard & The Doughnut Project Introduce the Angry Crisp Doughnut

WALDEN, NEW YORK – November 14, 2017 – Angry Orchard Cider Company and New York City-based The Doughnut Project have teamed up again, this time for National Apple Cider Day (November 18th) to bring America’s most popular hard cider and the timeless apple crisp dessert together into a one-of-a-kind creation: The Angry Crisp Doughnut.

While it may seem like there’s a foodie holiday for everything these days, National Apple Cider Day is one to definitely celebrate this year. To do so, you could grab a freshly-picked apple from a local orchard, or you could opt for the Angry Crisp Doughnut. Yes, that’s right. A perfectly sweet and soft twist on the classic apple crisp in a doughnut! It’s also made with a touch of hard cider, now we’re talking. Infused with Angry Orchard’s flagship cider style, Crisp Apple, the Angry Crisp Doughnut’s crumbly, crunchy topping, and warm doughy inside is the ultimate swoon-worthy treat.

Angry Orchard Cider Company

To celebrate National Apple Cider Day, the doughnut creation will be available for a limited time, Friday, November 17th – Sunday, November 19th at The Doughnut Project’s West Village location and at Angry Orchard’s Cider House at the Angry Orchard in Walden, New York on Saturday, November 18th. For folks who won’t be able to make it to either of these locations, Angry Orchard and The Doughnut Project are sharing the recipe for home bakers around the country, encouraging them to share their very own Angry Crisp creations on social media, tagging @AngryOrchard and using the hashtag #AngryCrisp.

“Everyone enjoys a refreshing hard cider paired with their favorite doughnut, especially during the fall,” said Ryan Burk, head cider maker at Angry Orchard. “So for National Apple Cider Day, we wanted to bring the pairing to life with our cider, giving people yet another unique way to experience Angry Orchard and celebrate the season.”

The cider makers at Angry Orchard are constantly experimenting with new styles, blends and techniques to continue to push the craft of cider making forward, to ultimately create new ways for drinkers to experience all that cider can offer. Similarly, The Doughnut Project is well known for their small-batch, innovative creations and playing with unique flavors.

“We have a true passion point for creating unique, unexpected and delicious recipes,” says Leslie Polizzotto, Co-Founder of The Doughnut Project. “The Apple Crisp is such an iconic fall dessert and we wanted to give people a taste of it like they’ve never had before. The hard cider in this recipe provides the perfect amount of juicy fresh apple notes that balance the doughnuts’ sweet crunchy goodness.”

To experience the Crisp Apple Cider Doughnut please visit The Doughnut Project at 10 Morton Street, NYC starting Friday, November 17th. Angry Orchard will also have limited quantities available at no cost for drinkers who visit the Angry Orchard, 2241 Albany Post Road, Walden, NY on Saturday, November 18th. Quantities are limited; doughnuts will be available while they last.

About Angry Orchard Cider Company:
Angry Orchard Cider Company’s cider makers have been experimenting with apple varieties and unique flavors to develop hard cider recipes for 20 years. The cider makers have travelled the world to find the best apples for cider making and chose specific varieties, like French bittersweet apples from Normandy and culinary apples from Italy and the United States, based on each cider’s flavor profile. In November 2015, Angry Orchard established a home for cider research and development called the Cider House, located on a historic apple orchard in the New York Hudson River Valley. In May 2016, Angry Orchard planted three acres of traditional cider-making apples at the Orchard that they will use for research and experimentation at the Cider House.

Angry Orchard makes a variety of year-round craft cider styles, including Angry Orchard Crisp Apple, a fruit forward hard cider that balances the sweetness of culinary apples with dryness and bright acidity of bittersweet apples for a complex, refreshing taste. Despite the recent growth of hard cider in the U.S., the category is still small and relatively unknown. Angry Orchard is committed to drinker education and awareness-building to help grow the category for all craft cider makers.

About The Doughnut Project:

The Doughnut Project is a small-batch, hand-crafted doughnut shop located in the West Village of Manhattan. The shop combines some of the best doughnuts in America with an upbeat, artistic vibe. The shop’s co-owners Troy Neal and Leslie Polizzotto create unique flavors inspired by the amazing food and creative cocktails of New York City. The yeast-raised doughnuts have glazes, fillings, and toppings that include out-of-the-box ingredients such as bacon, beets, olive oil, ricotta cheese, sesame seeds, black pepper and sea salt. The shop creates new and intriguing flavor profiles on a regular basis and sells out daily.

O’Neill’s: Irish Hospitality, Comfort Food & Perfect Pints

by Katie Schlientz November 13, 2017
written by Katie Schlientz
oneills norwalk

The last time I experienced Irish hospitality, I was in a small pub in Killarney, Ireland. On a bus tour navigating all of the must-see spots in the southern tip of the country, I was at the end of my week-long trip and tired of long hours on the bus. After unpacking at the hotel, my friends and I welcomed the chance to head out for dinner and drinks.

One step out the door of the hotel, we headed towards the sound of laughter and bagpipes. The tunes and glee intertwined creating an intoxicating draw and the atmosphere inside the pub was pure joy—friendly staff, giddy clientele, and a host of independent, local musicians singing away in local brogue. We were instantly brought into the fold, becoming part of the liveliness of the location. Here, everyone who stepped into the door was family. It was true Irish hospitality.

When I walked into O’Neill’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in South Norwalk, a wave of déjà vu came over me—I was instantly transported back to Killarney. Although it is much larger in scale, O’Neill’s rustic interior has that small town Irish pub feel—the promise of cozying up to the bar to enjoy a nice pint and Irish comfort food.

But this Irish pub doesn’t just promise Irish hospitality… It delivers.

Irish Fare

Okay, I know what you’re probably thinking: the Irish aren’t generally know for their cuisine. But do yourself a favor and try O’Neill’s traditional dishes authenticated by family recipes. There’s a variety of savory pies—Shepherd, Chicken Pot, and Fisherman, but to this Irish lass, the true test of traditional fare is the Corned Beef and Cabbage, served year round with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. (Spoiler alert: it’s a must!)

oneills norwalk
The menu also offers favorites like Fish & Chips and Bangers & Mash, but if you’re in the mood for some serious comfort food, try the Old World Beef Stew. Tender bits of beef, onions, celery and carrots swim in a rich gravy circling a dollop of mashed potatoes. It is hearty, full of flavor, and delicious.

oneills norwalk

Looking for something a bit on the lighter side? Not a problem. O’Neill’s coveted corned beef can also be enjoyed in their Reuben Panini, where thick-cut slices of meat, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, and Russian dressing are housed between two pieces of rye.

To read more, check out my blog post dedicated to O’Neill’s Irish Pub & Restaurant on the Norwalk Now website. Norwalk Now is Norwalk in Real Time — the heartbeat of a New York City suburb featuring the vibrant retail, dining, entertainment, and recreational lifestyle of a thriving coastal community.
