Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Westchester NY

by Katie Schlientz March 13, 2017
written by Katie Schlientz
st patricks day westchester ny

March 17th is this Friday, and if you’re anything like me, you can’t way to dig in to some corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes paired with some delicious craft brew. I’ve rounded up some of the best places and resources for you to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Westchester NY…

st patricks day parade

PARADES

March 17th: The New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade celebrates over 250 years of history and runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Michael J. Dowling, President & CEO of Northwell Health, serves as this year’s Grand Marshal.

March 18th: The Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade (in my opinion, the BEST in Westchester!) kicks off at the corner of Hyatt and McLean Avenues at 1 p.m. His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan will lead the parade.

{IntoxiKate Tip!} Heading to the Yonkers St. Patrick’s Day Parade? Don’t chance your luck with parking. Head to Empire City Casino, where you can park for free and hop on a shuttle to the parade. Simply use the Yonkers Avenue Entrance of the casino. Shuttles will start running at 9:30 a.m. and drop off and pick up spectators on the corner of Hillview & Kimball Avenues, one block up from McLean Avenue until 5 p.m.

March 19th: Both the Pearl River and Soundshore St. Patrick’s Day Parades kick off at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

BITES & BEERS

Yonkers

• Yonkers Brewing Co. created a special craft brew in honor of Cardinal Dolan. (To hear details, check out Brewmaster Dave Hartmann on Fork This with IntoxiKate Tuesday at 6 p.m.). The Cream Ale should be paired with their Mega Classic Corned Beef Sandwich, slathered in the housemade stone ground mustard. Also on tap? An Irish Red, Vanilla Stout, and the “Good Stuph” Stout. Go: 92 Main St., Yonkers, yonkersbrewing.com

• Dan Rooney’s at Empire City Casino is offering their banging Corned Beef and Cabbage Platter (pictured above), as well as specials on Jameson shots. Go: 810 Yonkers Ave., Yonkers, empirecitycasino.com

• Rory Dolan’s is hosting live music by the Narrowbacks, plus serving food all day inside and out. I can’t help you choose between their 50 draught beers, but I will tell you their Traditional Irish Lamb Stew is pretty amazing. If you’re looking for something on the lighter side, try the Dublin-Style Fish and Chips. Go: 890 McLean Ave., Yonkers, rorydolans.com

• Burke’s Bar & Restaurant has this incredible Bangers and Mash Platter, but I also enjoy the Irish Chicken Curry. Go: 645 Bronx River Rd., Yonkers, burkesbar.com

White Plains

• Emma’s Ale House is always a good time, and their Deconstructed Chicken Pot Pie and Guinness Braised Beef Stew are both delicious options to indulge in a little Irish cuisine. Go: 68 Gedney Way, White Plains, emmasalehouse.com

Mamaroneck

• The parade is Sunday, but start partying Friday night with Molly Spillane’s. DJ Finelli starts spinning tunes at 10 p.m. so dance, drink, and be Irish! If you need a little eat to throw in there, check out the Jameson Glazed Bacon or the Spillane’s Special Burger, topped with a fried egg, corned beef, Irish cheddar, and beer mustard. #yesplease Go: 211 Mamaroneck Ave., Mamaroneck, mollyspillanes.com

The Bronx

• Rambling House unleashes the fun at 5 p.m. with my FAVORITE local Irish band, Shilelagh Law. No cover required, but I’d get their early check out the Full Irish Breakfast and the Guinness Burger while you wait for the tunes to start. Go: 4292 Katonah Ave., Bronx, ramblinghousenyc.com

Hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Party

• Drink local! Both Yonkers Brewing Co. and Broken Bow Brewery have an Irish Red to die for. Get a growler to go or order a keg (like, NOW!).

• Siegel Bros. Marketplace has an amazing lineup of prepped and pre-packaged food. But if you’re hosting a St. Patrick’s Day bash, you may want to pick up their Sheppard’s Pie or Chicken Pot Pie. P.S. Head next door to their Wine & Spirits Shop to pick up your favorite whiskey! Go: 39 S. Moger St., Mount Kisco, www.siegelbrosmarketplace.com

• Hosting something a bit bigger? Ben’s Delicatessen is overing a Corned Beef and Cabbage Special that feeds ten guests for $189.99. The package—available until March 17th—includes 4 lbs of corned beef, boiled cabbage, potatoes, carrots, coleslaw, relish and rye bread. Go: 718 Central Park Ave., Scarsdale, bensdeli.net

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

IntoxiKate’s Picks for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week 2017

by Katie Schlientz March 6, 2017
written by Katie Schlientz
hudson valley restaurant week 2017

It’s that time of year again! The Valley Table’s Hudson Valley Restaurant Week 2017 kicks off today and runs until March 19th, offering a three-course lunch menu for $22.95 and three-course dinner for $32.95. (Please note: These prices and exclusive of drinks, tax, and tip.) As always, I’ve rounded up my IntoxiKate picks for #HVRW. After scouring the available menus, the restaurants featured below highlight some of the most delicious dinner options tantalizing those tastebuds.

IntoxiKate’s Hudson Valley Restaurant Week Picks*:

Boro6 Wine Bar

Since it’s opened, I’ve heard nothing but good things about this river town wine bar. I scoped out the location when it was closed, but I’m looking forward to trying it during restaurant week.
Appetizer: The arugula appetizer salad with bresaola, shaved fennel, and parmesan.
Entrée: You know I can’t say no to a charcuterie board with cornichons, quince paste, and artisanal honey. Pair that with a glass of wine! #yesplease
Go: 549 Warburton Ave., Hastings-on-Hudson, 914-231-9200, www.boro6winebar.com
Bonus: Afterwards, I want to swing by Penny Lick Ice Cream for some all-natural Honey Graham ice cream to go.

harpers dobbs ferry

Harper’s Restaurant & Bar

Okay, I’ll admit it. Harper’s is on my list EVERY year, because I am positively obsessed with Chef Chris Vergara’s Hudson Valley Duck Confit. Pair it with one of the eatery’s banging craft cocktails, and you’ve got one heck of a meal on your hands! Please note: The HVRW dinner menus is available Sunday to Thursday only.
Appetizer: Mushroom Toast Gruyere with Madeira (a fortified wine hailing from the Portuguese island of Madiera) and fried egg
Entrée: Hudson Valley Duck Confit with frisee, plum jam, and toasted almonds. (Didn’t see that one coming, did you?)
Dessert: Salted Caramel Pot de Crème with hazelnuts, sea salt, and whipped cream.
Go: 92 Main St., Dobbs Ferry, 914-693-2306, harpersonmain.com

Crabtree’s KittleHouse Restaurant & Inn

If you don’t know by now, you need to go ahead and taste it—Executive Chef Jay Lippin celebrates the bounty of the Hudson Valley like no other. He’s not only making incredible dishes derived from local ingredients, but he’s working with farmers to bring back produce originally harvested here.
Appetizer: Hudson Valley Dandelion Green Salad with spiced almonds, pecorino, and a lemon herb vinaigrette.
Entrée: Ricotta Gnocchi Bolognese with Highland Farm venison, Helder Herdwyck pork,  and Hudson Valley grass-fed beef.
Dessert: Chocolate Panna Cotta with espresso crème anglaise and chocolate chip biscotti.
Go: 11 Kittle Rd., Chappaqua, 914-666-8044, www.kittlehouse.com

Dubrovnik Restaurant

Listen, Hudson Valley Restaurant Week offers the perfect excuse to check out a new restaurant, and I’m embarrassed to say Dubrovnik is still on my list. I can’t wait to try the chef’s take on American Croatian cuisine.
Appetizer: Grilled Shrimp and Calamari with white cabbage salad.
Entrée: Chicken “Tetka Nikica” served with mashed potatoes, wild mushroom sauces, and truffle oil.
Dessert: Croatian style crepes with fruit jam.
Go: 721 Main St., New Rochelle, 914-637-3777, www.dubrovnikny.com

Tomorrow’s Fork This with IntoxiKate episode features my Hudson Valley Restaurant Week picks, as well as interviews with chefs and sponsors participating in the event. Make sure to tune into 1490 WCGH or listen live at wgch.com for the full scoop at 6 p.m.

Sapori Italian Restaurant

I heart this cozy little Italian eatery on Central Avenue in White Plains.
Appetizer: Vongole Oreganata aka baked clams with seasoned bread crumbs.
Entrée: Vitello Funghi includes scaloppini veal and assorted fresh mushrooms in shallot brandy sauce.
Dessert: Tiramisu.
Go: 324 Central Ave., White Plains, 914-684-8855, saporiofwhiteplains.com

Purdy’s Farmer & The Fish

I recently had a conversation about favorite seafood spots with a fellow Westchester foodie, and Farmer & The Fish kept coming up. It’s seriously a no-brainer—it is one of the best places for fresh fish (and veggies to boot). Please note: The Hudson Valley Restaurant Week menu is only available Monday to Thursday.
Appetizer: Go for the Raw Bar!
Entrée: Barnegat Light Scallops with greenhouse herb risotto and preserved lemon.
Dessert: Warm chocolate cake with bourbon walnuts. The above photo is a banging warm chocolate cake I enjoyed over the summer at this hot spot, and doesn’t reflect the actual dish on the menu. (But it looked too good NOT to post!)
Go: 100 Titicus Rd., North Salem, 914-617-8380, farmerandthefish.com

Beyond Westchester

Tuthill House on the Mill

Chef Jeremy Berlin pairs local ingredients with French-inspired techniques, all housed in the historic gristmill overlooking the Shawangunk River in Gardiner, NY. The HVRW deal on dinner is offered on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Appetizer: Classic Country Pate with pickled baby vegetables, mache, and apple mustarda.
Entrée: Hudson Valley Vegetable Cassoulet cannellini bean stew and olive oil bread crumbs.
Dessert: Trio of Tuthill House Desserts including star anise crème brulee, berry preserve tartlet, and flourless chocolate cake.
Go: 20 Gristmill Lane, Gardiner, 845-255-4151,  tuthillhouse.com

*Please check all restaurant’s websites for their full Hudson Valley Restaurant Week menus. The above recommendations only showcase IntoxiKate’s picks.

INNOVATION + PROGRESS WITH FOOD PANTRY

Catholic Charities of Rockland

Charity: Catholic Charities of Rockland

The Deets: During their Blessing of the Soil Event on April 22nd, Catholic Charities will unveil their new greenhouse, located at 78 Hudson Avenue. The greenhouse is the first of its kind in the New York region to be constructed to benefit a food pantry. The greenhouse, funded through a grant from NYS Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski’s office, will help provide healthy food choices to hundreds of families and help educate people on the value of gardening and the importance of making healthy choices. This is not only an incredible resource to have in our own backyard, and I’m hoping this innovation spreads to more local charities in our area! To RSVP to the event to get a first look at the greenhoouse, CLICK HERE.

INTOXIKATE DANCES FOR A CAUSE

Charity: Hillside Food Outreach

The Deets: I’m humbled to announce I am one of the “star” dancers for the Hillside Food Outreach’s “Dancing with the Stars” fundraising event. I’ll be working with a professional dance instructor from the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Yonkers, competing in front of a panel of judges at the May 6th event. (Make sure to like IntoxiKate: Living Life Deliciously on Facebook for being the scenes footage.) This is an incredibly important cause to me and for our community, so I’m hoping I’ll have your support for the People’s Choice, by voting for me—when the website is up and running! Each vote is $10 and is 100% tax detuctible. Hillside Food Outreach delivers food on a monthly basis to over 2,100 individuals who live at or below the poverty line in Putnam and Westchester Counties, as well as Western Connecticut. Yonkers Brewing Co. Announces New Brewmaster

by Katie Schlientz February 22, 2017
written by Katie Schlientz
yonkers brewing co brewmaster

Yonkers Brewing Co. announced new Brewmaster Dave Hartmann this morning at the brewery.  Along with his expertise and knowledge, the 25-year veteran brings recipes that have won numerous awards at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF), the World Beer Cup and other festivals and competitions. The renewed focus on bringing great beer to Yonkers and beyond is a key component of the company strategy for the upcoming year.

“I saw a huge opportunity with Yonkers Brewing and it was the perfect time to join the team,” said Hartmann.  “When I first met with team YBC their passion for the city, for the craft and for growing the business was exactly what I was looking for.”

When he graduated from the UC Davis Master Brewers Program in 1994, Hartmann already had brewing experience under his belt. After working six years with then startup Empire Brewing Company (Syracuse, NY), Hartmann joined Long Trail Brewing Company in 2009, eventually becoming their Brewmaster in 2011.

“Dave brings award winning knowledge and a passion for the craft; and as we enter the next chapter of the business I am confident that Dave will be a big part of our growth,” said BrewEO John Rubbo.

“Trading in 135,000 barrels per year for a projected 4,000 is a big change, but our relationship with Two Roads allows us to perfect the core brews while creating fun and innovative limited time offerings on the smaller in house system,” said Hartmann.

Yonkers Brewing Co. will host their big reveal party, open to the public, on March 31st, featuring Dave’s limited time offering brews. For more information on the party, visit www.yonkersbrewing.com.

Best Places to Enjoy Valentine’s Day in Westchester

by Katie Schlientz February 9, 2017
written by Katie Schlientz
valentines day in westchester

Valentine’s Day is less than one week away, and if you are procrastinating on where to go Tuesday, don’t worry. I’ve scoured restaurant menus for the best aphrodisiac ingredients creating the tastiest dishes, all housed in some of Westchester most romantic eateries. From oysters to cherries, chili peppers to olive oil, here’s a round up of where you can get your aphrodisiac on at the best places to enjoy Valentine’s Day in Westchester:

valentines day in westchester

OYSTERS

Great for: Oysters are high in zinc—great for fertility—and contain amino acids that jumpstart the production of sex hormones.
Set the tone at: Saltaire Oyster Bar & Fish House
Saltaire has a variety of fresh oyster options (check their menu which changes daily) available at the bar, where they’ll shuck oysters right in front of you. IntoxiKate recommends the Hook Tower—half a lobster, four shrimp, three clams, three oysters, six mussels and three crab claws. The smallest of the raw towers is perfect for an intimate party of two ($50).
Go: 55 Abendroth Ave., Port Chester, 914-939-2425, saltaireoysterbar.com

CHILI PEPPERS

Great for: Indulging in this spicy pepper mimics the physical reactions your body feels when it’s aroused—chili peppers stimulate endorphins, speed up the heart rate, and make you sweat (but let’s keep that to a minimum).
Set the tone at: Sambal: Thai + Malaysian
Dine on Sambal’s Drunkman Noodles: spicy rice noodles with chili peppers, garlic, baby corn, carrots, greens, chicken and basil leaves. One of the options on their three-course Valentine’s Day prix fixe menu, the offer also includes a glass of sparkling wine for $49.95 per person.*
Go: 4 West Main Street, Irvington, 914-478-2200, www.sambalny.com

valentines day in westchester

AVOCADO

Great for: The avocado contains high levels of Vitamin E, which helps you feel youthful and energized.
Set the tone at: Le Provencal Bistro
I mean, you can’t really go wrong with a French eatery that just oozes romance. Check out the trendy avocado toast from the appetizer menu with toasted pistachios, pistachio oil, and sea salt on grilled bread ($13).
Go: 436 Mamaroneck Ave., Mamaroneck, 914-777-2324, www.provencalbistro.com

valentines day in westchester

CHOCOLATE

Great for: Chocolate = Dopamine = Feelings of pleasure
Set the tone at: RiverMarket Bar + Kitchen
If the feeling of eating local isn’t enough to turn you on (is it just me?) check out RiverMarket’s decadent dessert—Battenkill Valley buttermilk chocolate cake, mocha mousse, and vanilla crème a l’anglaise, our mascarpone sorbet ($12). #yesplease
Go: 127 W Main St., Tarrytown, 914-631-3100, www.rivermarketbarandkitchen.com

HONEY

Great for: Honey, ah, sugar sugar… You are my candy girl… Oops, sorry about getting carried away there. Honey contains boron, which helps regulate both estrogen and testosterone levels, and gives you a bit of a buzz from a natural energy boost.
Set the tone at: L’inizio
Husband and wife team Scott and Heather Fratangelo tackle sweet and savory at this Ardsley eatery (and look good doing it!). They’re offering a few aphrodisacs on their appetizer menu, including the smoked Maple Brook Farm ricotta with Acacia honey ($7)
and roasted butternut squash with crispy pancetta, frisee, spiced pecans, pomegranate, pancetta and vinaigrette ($14). Pomegranates are chock full of antioxidants and encourage blood flow.
Go: 698 Saw Mill River Rd., Ardsley, 914-693-5400, www.liniziony.com

ARTICHOKES

Great for: Artichokes are also full of antioxidants and get the blood pumping.
Set the tone at: The Inn at Pound Ridge
The Inn is offering a Valentine’s Day menu with items like spicy tuna tartare and roasted beef tenderloin. But you will also be allowed to order the parmesan crusted organic chicken off the regular menu ($27). It’s a good thing, because this dishes is packed with artichokes and a lemon-basil sauce.
Go: 258 Westchester Ave., Pound Ridge, 914-764-1400, www.theinnatpoundridge.com

valentines day in westchester

PINE NUTS

Great for: Pine nuts are high in zinc, which is linked to promoting a healthy sex drive. Grind it up with basil and olive oil—also an aphrodisiac—and you’ve got a pesto perfect for performance.
Set the tone at: Serafina
The Pappardelle Di Portofino is tossed with homemade pesto sauce, string beans, extra pine nuts and potatoes ($15.50).
Go: 199 Main St, White Plains, 914-288-9300, www.whiteplains.serafinarestaurant.com

valentines day in westchester

ARUGULA

Great for: Antioxidant-rich arugula has its benefits, but the nutrients and minerals in this leafy green have also been proved to block environmental stressors that could negatively impact libido. #eatyourgreens
Set the tone at: Vintage 1891 Kitchen
Vintage 1891 offers a romantic atmosphere while pulling double duty in the aphrodisiac category on the menu. The arugula salad with apple, blue cheese, toasted almonds, and sherry vinaigrette is a win-win, but pair it with the pan seared scallops with cauliflower purée, Brussels sprouts, and fig glaze ($30) and you’ll knock it out of the park! Figs are full of potassium, which helps elevate energy levels. Oh, and hey there avocado. We see you in their stellar tuna tartare dish too!
Go: 2098 Boston Post Rd., Larchmont, 914-834-9463, www.vintage1891kitchen.com

CHERRIES

Great for: Cherries are packed with a ton of superfruit vitamins, including Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, potassium and magnesium.
Set the tone at: Nonno’s Trattoria at Empire City Casino
Nonno’s is also offering a Valentine’s Day prix fixe menu, the three-course menu priced for two ($75*) includes two options for dessert—cherry mascarpone or chocolate cake with drunken cherries.
Go: 810 Yonkers Ave, Yonkers, 914-457-2457, www.empirecitycasino.com

valentines day in westchester

OLIVE OIL

Great for: The monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in olive oil help maintain a healthy heart, blood flow, and also boost hormone production.
Set the tone at: Village Social
The 70 Burrata includes chestnut butter and plenty of olive oil which can be soaked up with grilled country bread ($12).
Go: 251 E. Main St., Mount Kisco, 914-864-1255, villagesocialkb.com

Siegel Bros. Marketplace and Wine & Spirits

If you’ve been to the village of Mount Kisco lately, you’ve seen two new kids on the block—Siegel Bros. Marketplace and their adjacent Wine & Spirits shop. Run by Doug, Jeremy, and Chef David Nevins (plus butcher and fishmonger Don Meyers), the shop is a fourth generation owned and operated speciality food market. The brothers’ great grandfather, Abram Siegel, opened a kosher butcher shop in Woodbine, NJ, in 1912. Their father, Bruce (Abram’s grandson), is a renowned wine importer and retail giant as the owner of Hay Day Wine Market in Ridgefield, CT and Grand Harvest Wine in New York’s Grand Central Terminal.

Experience, expertise, and a heritage of running specialty markets is apparent in both the Marketplace and the Wine & Spirits shops. Host the Best Super Bowl Party in Westchester

by Katie Schlientz February 2, 2017
written by Katie Schlientz
sherry b super bowl

If you are a foodie like me, you are hosting the best Super Bowl Party in Westchester. Even if your team isn’t playing, it’s a great opportunity to gather family and friends to watch the big game (and a great excuse to experiment with some fun recipes in the kitchen). But take it from me—the hostess with the mostest—it’s always nice to have a few items ready to pick up so you can concentrate on the fun stuff.

Here are the game day VIPs—aka the BEST resources in Westchester—playing a supportive role to the action in the kitchen:

yonkers brewing co super bowl

BEER

Head To: Yonkers Brewing Co.
Super Bowl Special:
You can catch the game on the big screens at the brewery on Feb. 5th, but the brewery is offering 15% off growlers to go on Saturday and Sunday.
IntoxiKate Recommends: The Vienna Lager
Go: 92 Main Street in Yonkers, www.yonkersbrewing.com

pinterest

For great recipes, decoration ideas, and more, check out IntoxiKate’s Super Bowl board on Pinterest.

3-FOOT HERO

Head To: DeCicco & Sons
Super Bowl Special: DeCicco & Sons catering division has a host of options and packages to feed your football fans, but their signature hero sandwiches—available by the foot—are a crowd pleaser. Take me to the full menu.
IntoxiKate Recommends: The DeCicco’s special offers all-natural, antibiotic and hormone-free chicken cutlets with fresh, handmade mozzarella and roasted peppers housed in freshly-baked Italian bread.
Order: For the location closest to you, visit www.deciccoandsons.com.

6-FOOT (TALL) HERO

Head To: Empire City Casino
Super Bowl Special: Okay, so it’s not food. But if you’re a Giants fan, you don’t want to miss former legend David Tyree in the casino’s Entertainment Lounge at 5:30 p.m. on game day. The first 100 guests get to mingle with Tyree and score a signed mini football.
IntoxiKate Recommends: Dan Rooney’s Sports Pub is offering a $35 per person buffet menu (don’t miss their wings!) paired with $5 Bud and Bud Light drafts.
Go: 810 Yonkers Avenue in Yonkers, www.empirecitycasino.com

{UPDATE:  The biggest stage to watch the biggest game of the year is Empire City Casino with New York Giants Legends Justin Tuck and Stephen Baker. Both will be stopping by the premier entertainment destination in the Northeast to host a viewing party on Sunday when the Atlanta Falcons take on the New England Patriots for all the marbles.  Tuck and Baker are filling in for David Tyree who had a last-minute conflict.}

siegel bros super bowl

CHARCUTERIE

Head To: Siegel Bros. Marketplace
Super Bowl Special: The newbie on the Mount Kisco block is bringing some serious game, offering a whole menu full of football favorites like wings, pulled pork, onion dip, and rotisserie chicken prepped by onsite Chef David Nevins. But give your charcuterie a huge boost with their selection of cheeses and smoked meats. One step in, and the smells of blue cheeses and parmesan will have your mouth watering… Seriously.
Bonus: Swing by the neighboring wine and spirits shop to stock your bar.
Order: 39 S. Moger Avenue in Mount Kisco, 914-864-0690, www.siegelbrosmarketplace.com

TACOS

Head To: The Taco Project
Super Bowl Special: The Tarrytown eatery is a great spot to grab some Mexican food, but they also allow you to build your own tacos by the tray. Choose your protein—chicken, steak, beef, fish, shrimp, pork belly, short rib, chorizo, or veggie—and let the team do the rest.
Bonus: Burritos, quesadillas, chips, salsa, and guacamole are also available!
Order: 18 Main Street in Tarrytown, 914-909-4455, www.thetacoprojectny.com

Music, Country Fair Bacon, and Peaches in Norwalk

by Katie Schlientz February 1, 2017
written by Katie Schlientz
peaches in norwalk

When I think about peaches, I think about wrapping my hand around something soft and fuzzy, pulling the small fruit off its perch from one of my dad’s trees. It’s a nostalgic moment—definitely summer, and I can almost feel the juice run down my chin as I take a bite. Refreshing.

When it comes to Peaches Southern Pub & Juke Joint, I’m not thinking soft and fuzzy, but I am thinking refreshing. Here, my tastebuds aren’t getting the same effect as sinking my teeth into a ripe peach, but I will admit, the collaboration between owner Greer Fredericks and executive chef Paul Failla, is refreshing—Southern comfort food with a twist.

I’d recommend heading there on an evening towards the end of the week, when you’ll find live music pumping from the spacious upstairs room, decked out with knick-knacks Greer has collected throughout her travels.

peaches in norwalk

You’ll be with some friends, and you’ll kick off the evening with some super craft cocktails from Beverage Director Tom Siano at the downstairs bar. Pick your poison—there are a ton of sweet and savory options—but everyone knows IntoxiKate is a martini gal, and (thoroughly) enjoyed a pickled okra martini.

peaches in norwalk

But before you head upstairs to dance the calories off, let Greer and Paul fill those bellies.

peaches in norwalk

IntoxiKate Tip: Start slowly. Deviled Eggs aren’t an item I see on every menu, but I’m glad to find it here, as it was a great introduction to Chef Paul’s brining (and now my) obsession. The beet-brined eggs are split and deviled, then topped with a generous portion of braised bacon and picked okra.

peaches in norwalk

As if to trick my stomach into thinking I’d be eating healthy for the rest of the evening, the Chopped Kale Salad made its way to the table. Packing some serious crunch from both raw and fried kale—texture alert!—the salad also sported charred corn, pickled beets, cotja cheese, and an amazing “green goddess” dressing that I quickly concluded should be smothered on everything.

peaches in norwalk

Switch back to the fried goodness we know Southern food to be, Chef Paul sent out a classic—Fried Green Tomatoes. Lightly battered with cornmeal for that extra crunch, it was then topped with tomato jam and a slice of country ham. There is lots going on here—you’ve got the tartness of the green tomato, saltiness from the ham, and then a tomato jam that offers a bit of acidity to connect it all.

Greer Fredericks is no stranger to the restaurant world. In 2013, she made her mark on South Norwalk with Mama’s Boy Southern Table & Refuge, securing her spot as a driving force within the Fairfield County restaurant and nightlife scene.

Okay, before I describe the must-have dish at Peaches in Norwalk, you have to promise to stick with me. When I first read the description, I thought, I’m limiting myself to just one. But warning: these are addicting…

peaches in norwalk

The Country Fried Bacon is literally like hosting a county fair in your mouth; all of your favorites are in one place and it tastes delicious. Take a generous portion of braised bacon—fat and all—skewer it, fry it in funnel cake batter, sprinkle it with powdered sugar, and then drizzle a little black pepper maple syrup. Ok, I don’t want to hear “I’m on a diet.” Listen (this one time): embrace the pork fat.

peaches in norwalk

If you’re looking to indulge in a classic Southern coastal comfort dish, check out the Shrimp and Grits. Here, the blackened shrimp, spicy andouille sausage, pickled okra swim in a sea of firm and chewy grits.

peaches in norwalk

Another can’t miss item is the Pork Shank. There’s just something about pork that is crispy on the outside but still juicy when you cut into that rocks my socks off. And that’s not even the best part of this dish—the black eyed pea cassoulet is outrageously flavorful with pickled vegetables and onion jam.

peaches in norwalk

Another IntoxiKate favorite? The Bucket’O Chicken for two, served pickled brined or Nashville-style (smokey and spicy) with cornbread, coleslaw, collard greens and mac’n’cheese.

Southern Comfort Brunch: Judy’s Bar + Kitchen Stamford

by Katie Schlientz January 26, 2017
written by Katie Schlientz
judys bar and kitchen stamford

Misconceptions can be everything with food. And I, of all people, should know better. Normally I’d tout that you can’t get southern food like you can in the South. I’d also be bold enough to say I’m not a huge breakfast fan—savory is my thing and I usually find too many sweets on morning menus.

But Chef Judith Roll, of Judy’s Bar + Kitchen in Stamford, may have convinced me otherwise on both accounts.

judys bar and kitchen stamford

Greeting you on the table are some tradition Southern breads to start you salivating—small portions of corn bread and bite-sized cheesy biscuits in small, stainless steel colanders left me wanting more (but I was glad I didn’t indulge and saved room for the calories to come.) #soworthit

judys bar and kitchen stamford

We’ll start where I started—sinking my teeth into Judy’s chicken wings ($9), served naked (how I like ’em) with a side of tangy BBQ sauce, Buffalo sauce, and blue cheese. The wings were crispy on the outside, but juicy on the inside, with a slight smoky flavor.

judys bar and kitchen stamford

A foodie friend at the table ordered a Bloody Mary from the customizable bar—yes, you get to decorate your own poison—and I was immediately jealous. With blue cheese-stuffed olives, bacon, horseradish and vegetables, Judith shows her bar game is on point.

judys bar and kitchen stamford

If I’m headed out to brunch, my go-to order is the chicken and waffles, and Judy’s does not disappoint. Powdered sugar-dusted buttermilk chicken tenders (no bones!) made it easy to cut into so savory chicken, waffle, and pure maple syrup could party together in mouth ($16).

And while we’re talking about waffles, let’s just recognize this tribute to the King.

judys bar and kitchen stamford

The “Elvis” Waffle ($14) doesn’t roll to the table with tunes, but it does carry a lot of flavor. Bananas (not pictured) and crumbled bacon sit atop a chocolate chip waffle, which comes with peanut butter and maple syrup. Not something I would put together in my fantasy world, but definitely something to try nonetheless.

If you’re wondering about eggs, Judy’s has them, but we’re not looking at an over-easy pair served with bacon and toast. With all thing’s at this Stamford joint, eggs are served with a twist.

judys bar and kitchen stamford

For example, this bad boy is know as the Kentucky Hot Brown ($14). Under that bacon—cured in house—and roasted tomato slice is cheesy goodness. Béchamel smothers house smoked chicken breast and grilled sour dough, almost giving that open-faced sandwich effect.

But let’s get real and talk house cured bacon and creamy grits for a bit. Judith will be the first one to admit she’s not from the South, but she knows what works when it comes to whipping up comfort food. With a commitment to house curing her own bacon and ham, ordered fresh-milled grits straight from the south, and some kicking bourbon maple syrup, it’s clear she’s seriously committed (and having a ton of fun doing it).

judys bar and kitchen stamford

With the Rhett Butler ($15), you can request your eggs fried or scrambled, but expect some seriously cheesy, seriously creamy grits. #Seriously. Accompanying this dish is ham or bacon, and a flakey buttermilk biscuit.

judys bar and kitchen stamford

Don’t expect a bacon, egg, and cheese here either. (I’m sure he plantains made you take pause…) The Good Morning Cubano Burrito ($14) will definitely kickstart your day, with fried eggs, Gruyere cheese, pulled pork and a spicy kick from jalapeños all housed in a grilled flour tortilla.

judys bar and kitchen stamford

When it comes to dessert, Judith is no joke. This chocolate peanut butter ($8) is a decadent option—if you have the room for it!).

judys bar and kitchen stamfordThe Nilla Wafer banana pudding ($8) was my favorite, with a taste of nostalgia from my favorite childhood cookie complimenting creamy (REAL) banana flavor.
